Chapter Ten

Tom gritted his teeth and smacked his palm on the kitchen table he was sitting at. “We don’t need this!” he yelled.

Brent took a sip from his coffee. “I didn’t kill the guy, Tom. Don’t snap at me,” he snarled back.

Tom focused on the call that was currently taking place with Norton Manday. Unfortunately, the call had been extremely unproductive so far. Tom had not managed to get any direct, conclusive answers from Norton. “Norton—”

Norton was in panic mode. His mind was racing, and the last thing he needed was Tom firing darts at his face. “Look, Tom, I haven’t heard back from Holston,” he lied, holding the phone with one hand while tossing a sweater into a suitcase with his other. It was time to get out of Dodge. Why? Because Holston was dead, and Norton knew he was the next sap in line to eat a bullet.

“You’re lying!” Tom roared. “Don’t make me send our taped conversation to the cops, Norton! Don’t push me into a corner!”

Norton glanced around the cramped bedroom in a log cabin that sat next to a frozen lake. The cabin, which had become like a second home to Norton, no longer felt welcoming or warm. Instead, it began to feel like the prison Norton had escaped. “Look,” he snapped at Tom, anger overriding his fear, “you better back off, pal, if you know what’s good for you and your brother. Pack what you can and make a wild run for it.”

“What are you talking about?” Tom demanded. “Norton, talk to me!”

“Talk to you?” Norton huffed and then completely lost it. “Okay, Tom, you want to hear the truth? I’ll tell you the truth!” He kicked the suitcase shut, ran over to a window that was covered with thick drapes, and peeked out into the vicious snowstorm. “Holston is dead!”

“Dead?” Tom repeated, dumbfounded. Brent lowered his coffee cup and eased closer to his brother, who held up a firm hand. “Norton, explain yourself.”

“Holston was found dead in a hotel room, Tom.” Norton fired his words like a wobbly arrow struggling to reach its target. “Someone filled him with a couple bullets.”

Tom froze. “Any idea who, Norton?”

“Oh, yeah. I know who killed Holston, and that same person will be coming for me very soon. And after I’m dead, you and your brother are next in line!”

Norton also revealed to Tom that the killer had called his office, leaving out the part where Norton had cried like a baby and revealed every single detail about his plan to betray the Caribou Falls tribe, enlisting the help of the Graft brothers. But to Norton’s shock, the killer knew all about the Graft brothers and was after information on Billy Northfield. “Tom, you better run while you can. The killer isn’t working alone.”

Tom felt rage fill his eyes. “I’m going to kill you, Norton!” he promised, even though the threat was weak. The truth was, Tom would never see Norton Manday alive again.

“Get in line,” Norton said wryly.
