Chapter 12

Rael mustered all her reserve energy and gave the large metallic door one final shove. It slid slowly open with an annoying scraping sound. She felt guilty making such a racket, but when she glanced over at Bonk, he was still fast asleep on the floor. Good, he probably needed his rest after last night. All the excitement had been a little too much for him—and almost too much for her as well.

Fresh air now flowed into the boxcar. She took a deep breath. The clean country air came as a relief. After being stuck in that dark underground base with its helium-laden damp musty air, she needed to feel the wide-open spaces of the outside world. The sun was out, and she could see the country passing by at railway speeds. They’d survived last night unmolested, and no one seemed to be chasing them at the moment. She’d like to take more credit for all that, but she knew her escape was largely due to Pope’s intervention.

Rael leaned on the doorframe and continued to watch the outside world pass by her boxcar. She was watching, yes, but not really seeing anything that went by, because her mind’s eye was gazing upon inner thoughts instead. There were a lot of things to think about right about now, yet her mind felt blank. Only blank wasn’t the correct word for her mental state. Her mind was numb. Yes, that was a better description of how she felt. Only it wasn’t really true at all. It was a mental lie she was telling herself. She wished that her mind was numb, but it wasn’t. It was in pain. It was the kind of pain that prevented her from having more constructive thoughts. The bullets that bounced off her cloak last night might have left small bruises on her back, but those were injuries that her cloak could easily reverse. Mental anguish, though, was the kind of pain her cloak couldn’t heal. Pain like that was the cost paid for being a hunter. She couldn’t escape it, though at times like this she wondered if she’d signed up for a life she couldn’t totally handle.

The pain of guilt was the worst pain in the world to bear. She felt guilty about how things had ended up last night. Things had fallen apart, and it felt like everything was her fault. Maybe that wasn’t actually true, though, as she had not wished for any of what happened to happen. She wished most of all that she was back in Egypt with Amen and Boudicea. But she couldn’t go back to those times. Time marched ever onward toward her destiny. Whatever it was.

At this exact moment, she felt destined to fail at this affair. There was no escaping thinking that was true even if a guardian was on her side. Saving the world was a weight resting squarely on her shoulders alone without the wizard’s help. She’d not done nearly well enough to date on accomplishing her mission, even with his help.
