“Here’s the information.” Leonard Downey handed Brandon a sheet of paper. “Ida said you’d know how to make it look pretty.” The mercantile’s owner settled back in the chair and took a long swig of the coffee Brandon had offered him. “The same thing happens every year,” he continued. “Ida worries that something will go wrong, but nothing ever does. It’s worse this year, because the date of the party is Valentine’s Day.”

When he’d first approached Brandon about placing an extra ad in the Chronicle, Leonard had described the annual party he and Ida held the Saturday before Lent and how they invited the whole town for an evening of dancing followed by a cold supper.

“Laura thinks you should hire Phil Blakeslee to draw hearts or a cupid or some folderol like that to make the ad elegant.” Leonard winked. “Elegant was her word, not mine.”

“The Chronicle’s not set up to handle woodcut illustrations,” he told Leonard, “but there are other ways to make your ad stand out. I was thinking about centering it on a page and wording it like a formal invitation. You know, something like, ‘Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Downey request the pleasure of your company at . . .’”

As Brandon let his voice trail off, Leonard grinned. “That’s it. That’ll do the trick.” He drained his cup and rose. “One more thing. We’d better double the number of copies you bring me. I ran out last week.” He chuckled. “Seems that most of those folks who cancelled their subscriptions still want to read the paper, but they’re too proud to admit they made a mistake, so they spend more money to buy individual copies.” Leonard’s chuckle turned into a full-fledged laugh. “Serves ’em right for believing all those lies.”

That night, Brandon slept better than he had in weeks.
