Sara is in an unfamiliar house, but she knows who it belongs to all the same. It’s Dr. Bates’ home, and he is pacing back and forth in a living room with very sleek-looking leather furniture and art on the walls that her Aunt Kat, with her taste for modern art, wouldn’t find out of place.

There’s a soft thumping coming from the floor, and Sara follows Dr. Bates as he leaves the living room, walks to a heavy door, unlocks it, and heads downstairs. The light in the basement is dim; it’s only illuminated by a single naked bulb hanging from the ceiling. Sara can see boxes piled all around, and dust at least an inch thick on the floor, and, off in the corner, the source of the thumping.

It’s a barred door, and Sara can just about make out a tiny face behind it. “Sorry, Jake,” Dr. Bates says, sadly. “Your mother says you stay here. But it’s not her fault. It’s that new doctor. That Alderson woman. You wouldn’t be down here if it wasn’t for her. We wouldn’t have any problems. It’s all her fault. Everything…”
