Craven

It wasn’t my idea, but having money came with some responsibilities, including being in the public eye. People needed to see me make an appearance at one function or another, even if my head wasn’t into it. It was all about pretending.

I plastered a smile on my face and did what I needed to do.

“Stop fussing, and just let me help you with that,” Sandra said while she was fidgeting with my bow tie.

It went along with the monkey suit I was wearing for the evening festivities.

Sandra was paid extremely well for her services of companionship. The woman was a dynamo and was able to immerse herself into a conversation without even knowing the context. She was a consummate professional. She would make any man jealous, especially when they saw her hanging off my every word.

“You know that I don’t like these things. It’s the reason why I depend on you to be that all-important buffer. I need you to keep me from saying or doing something stupid,” I said.

As soon as the doorman opened the limousine, bursts of light from flashbulbs bounced off my eyes.

It wasn’t a red-carpet affair, but it certainly felt like an awards show. I took an instant dislike to the pomp and circumstance happening around me.

But I had to behave. I waved to my adoring fans as Sandra sashayed out, her flowing white dress fluttering around her. It was almost virginal, until you looked into her eyes to see an experienced seductress on the prowl.

“How long do we have to stay?” she asked as she handed me a champagne flute from the limousine.

I held the glass of liquid encouragement in my hand. “I just have to say a few words. Then we can slip out unnoticed. I’m sure you have better things to do this evening, and the full amount is already in your account.”

“The one thing I never have to worry about is you paying me. I always leave my calendar open when you call. I know my services aren’t cheap, but I do give you your money’s worth,” she said with a sly wink.

“Having you here is a godsend and worth every single penny.” I took a sip of the champagne, the bubbles tickling my nose. I swallowed the contents, letting the liquor warm my insides

There wasn’t anything sexual going on between us, but we did slip under the sheets for one moment of quick deliberation on that first night. She had proven to be a font of information by circulating the crowd without anybody realizing she was listening.

She was my fly on the wall, if you would.

It didn’t hurt that she had huge mountains on her chest that would make any man become a gibbering idiot with one look. The plunging neckline was only a part of the full profile.

The way she smiled and touched innocently had most men eating out of the palm of her hand.

“Excuse me for a moment while I complete my obligation for the evening,” I said.

“I hope everybody has brought an appetite and their pocketbooks.
