Chapter Six
THE exhibition was fabulous. Within half an hour of the scheduled start the gallery was packed with guests, all sipping champagne and sampling the cocktail food while they perused the artworks and chatted.
The gallery was in the beachside suburb of St Kilda. The front two rooms were large and airy and faced directly onto the street. The walls were painted white and in the daytime the rooms would be flooded with natural light spilling through the enormous floor-to-ceiling windows that also afforded the passing foot traffic good views of the artwork on display. St Kilda was a popular tourist haunt and Gabby and her husband, Finn, had dedicated one front room to Aboriginal art, leaving the other front room available for exhibitionsâin this case African art, including Benâs photographs. Displayed on stands around the room were African carvings and beadwork that Ben had sourced for his sister to import.
Ben had some unofficial duties to attend to that involved making sure those guests who were likely to part with their money were given the proper amount of attention. Maggie had expected this and while he had introduced her to a number of the guests she was quite happy to move about the gallery on her own. The noise level was quite high and it was relatively easy in a group as large as this for Maggie to blend in.
She had spent some time in the African room and was amazed by the quality of Benâs photographs. In contrast to the landscapes and animal shots that adorned his office walls there were a large number of portraits on display here. Maggie wished several of the portraits could talk; she would have loved to listen to their stories.
As the crowd grew larger she wandered into one of the smaller rooms at the rear of the gallery. She had the space to herself for a little while before she felt someone enter the room behind her. She knew it was Benâher senses immediately went on high alert whenever he was nearby, making her nerves tingle and raising goose bumps on her skin.
He came up behind her and wrapped his right arm around her waist. He whispered into her ear and his breath was warm on her cheek. âHave I told you how gorgeous you look in purple?â
She turned her head slightly to look at him, aware as she did that their mouths were now inches apart. âYou could always tell me twice,â she replied.
âYou look gorgeous.â Maggie felt herself blush. âPurple suits you. And itâs much easier to find you in a crowd if youâre not wearing black.â He grinned. âAre you hungry?â He brought his left hand around in front of her, offering her a plate piled high with nibbles. âI brought a selection. I wasnât sure what youâd want.â
Maggie chose a prawn skewered on a stalk of lemongrass. âYouâve managed to pull quite a crowd,âshe said as she removed the prawn by its tail, separating it from the lemongrass.
âI donât know that I can take all the credit.
