Eighteen
Hatch felt staying at the Moonbeam beyond this point would be a bad choice. So, she opted for isolation and drove out of town. The rundown gas station where sheâd shot Psycho in the foot seemed as good a place as any for her to rest and collect herself. Comfort wasnât a major concern, as she knew well enough that sleep would not come easily.
Hatch parked the Ford pickup around the backside of the building. She wanted to remain out of eyesight of any motorists traversing the roadway. She cut the engine. It sputtered once and then went silent. The only noise was the whip of the wind as it swirled around her. The dusty swirls and desolate landscape reminded Hatch of time in the Army. She allowed the sound of the gusts to soothe her.
Looking at her watch, sheâd only been asleep for a few hours. More than enough rest to regroup, both physically and mentally, from what she had witnessed the night before. Her mind was now cleared and ready to handle the tasks ahead. Sun penetrated the dust-covered windshield. The warmth of it took some of the chill out of the air. She rubbed her eyes and adjusted to the light.
It was early. Her routine morning start at Harryâs would be a challenging one at best. Sheâd driven to the diner last night, but it had already closed. Hatch realized she didnât know anything else about him. Not where he lived or his phone number. She had decided to wait until morning to try again.
Hatch drove the short distance back into town. The truckâs heat was on and it made a loud, rattling sound. As she passed the street leading to the motel, Hatch swore she could still smell the burnt remnants of room number two.
She arrived at the diner a few minutes later. Today, Chief Porter was back in his usual spot. Maybe he assumed the fire from last night would send her running. A thought made more probable when she entered. The chief of police spun in his stool and gave a look of surprise. He caught himself and immediately returned to his paper and began his daily routine of ignoring her.
Harry didnât look his usual chipper self. He was not bright-eyed and excited to see her as he had been in days past. Hatch took up her post on the stool next to Porter, who grunted and closed his newspaper. The rotund chief stood and walked out without saying a word. Hatch did nothing to encourage him otherwise. She didnât want to speak to the man. And was concerned about what would come out of her mouth if she did.
Harry grabbed the coffee pot and approached. Routine being a personâs best friend in time of distress. She knew this better than most. Stay the course. Keep the routine. Push back against the rising tide of pain.
He poured the cup, more sloppily than he had on prior occasions. The dark roast dribbled onto the counter. She saw the manâs eyes were glossy.
