CHAPTER EIGHT
Finding Olivia huddled on the floor of her dead sister’s bedroom holding a gun in her lap was more than a little startling for Nate. When she didn’t return immediately after leaving to get water, he just assumed she had decided to get a snack or take a bathroom break. But then more time passed and she still didn’t return.
Nate pulled on his boxers and headed into the hall. When he saw the light coming from Rosie’s room, he expected to find Olivia sitting on the bed, maybe holding Rosie’s old teddy bear. He did not anticipate a weapon being involved.
“You have a gun in your lap,” he said, trying not to sound alarmed.
“No, I’m just happy to see you,” she joked without smiling.
“Is it a real gun?” Nate stepped hesitantly into the room. Seeing it still untouched after all these years made it feel more like a shrine than a bedroom.
Olivia nodded.
“Is it loaded?” He was close enough to kneel down next to her.
“I’m not sure.” She looked at him. “Rosie had this hidden in her room. This whole time it’s just been sitting under the window seat.”
Nate held out his hand. “May I?”
“Take it.” Olivia shuddered.
It was a strong reaction from someone that was fairly used to being around guns. Nate kept his on their nightstand at night and Olivia had even used it at one point. But something about this gun was affecting her.
“It’s not loaded,” Nate said after checking. “It’s so clogged with dust I’m not sure it would even fire anyway.”
“Why did Rosie have a gun?” she asked, sounding lost.
Nate noticed how fragile Olivia looked, dwarfed by his oversized shirt and surrounded by pink cushions. “We should put everything back and go to your room. Ed is going to be home soon and it’s too cold for you to be sitting here in nothing but that shirt.”
“She was hiding so much from us.” Olivia’s beautiful eyes filled with tears. “She went out and bought a gun and no one in this house even knew.”
“Rosie didn’t want you to know. It wasn’t your fault.” Nate stood and offered his hand. “Come on. Let’s not get busted in here half-naked and holding a gun.”
“You think Ed would have a problem with this?” Olivia finally smiled.
Nate chuckled. “I don’t think he’d be a fan of it.”
“But you look so cute in those penguin boxers.” She started throwing things in the window seat opening.
“These were a gift from you, remember? I don’t buy cutesy boxers.” Nate placed the gun on top of an old sweater and set it carefully inside the opening. When he straightened, Olivia was staring at him. “What? Did you want me to do something else with the gun?”
“No, actually, I was just checking out your ass.” She smiled again, acting much more like her normal self.
Nate pretended to be alarmed. “I just heard your dad’s car pull in.”
“No!” Olivia’s eyes widened and grabbed his hand, hurrying him down the hall. As she shut the door behind them, she said, “Whew.
