Tyler and Griff sat against Hattie’s back, actually talking about school things. Of course, those things were the shift outing in a few weeks.

Josh and Mandy cuddled against her soft and warm belly. Kate might as well have been asleep, still holding tight against the cat’s chest. Leah idly scratched Hattie’s ear.

Well damn. That feels pretty good. He would miss things like this when he was . . . gone.

It does. Like having young ones to feed and care for.

I never suspected you had a nurturing bone in your body.

You are ever a cub. Hattie was amused

Dexx would never admit it, even to Hattie, but her deep rich voice soothed him. When they weren’t running or fighting for their lives’ anyway.

Tyler began to hum. There were no words with it, and the tune was completely made up, but it washed through Dexx and Hattie. Soothing and oddly energizing.

Come with me, Hattie said. We will scout for the elves in the time before.

Dexx wasn’t super interested. He was happy with being right where he was. Right now?

Yes, now. How do you think I can show you if we do not go together?

What about the kids?

They will be here when we get back.

Time flowed differently in Hattie’s world. Every time Dexx had been gone, only seconds passed in the real world. Strange, since time didn’t seem to pass there at all.

Come with me, cub. If we can find them there, we may learn something about the girl.

I thought you were an ancient. Can’t you just command them to tell you?

It is not as simple as that. Come. We will talk there.

Going with Hattie to her world wasn’t difficult. Not anymore. He always saw it like his dreams, but not quite a dream. And all in touch-me-color.

The process was fairly simple. Dexx had to “go” to Hattie where she lived in his mind. She would then take over and somehow emerge on the other side. He’d even met Leslie and her griffin there once.

Dexx stood with Hattie overlooking vast plains on a ridge. The sky was filled with deep clouds, flattening the light and destroying shadows. But the clouds weren’t boiling, so they were pleasant enough. Tell me again why we always come here first.

The place we enter is the place that is attached most strongly to ourselves. This was the place I became ancient, so this is my home.

And the protector? That big elk thing, is this his home too?

Mah’se. It is. We are . . . complicated. Like you and I are.

Does he like being a spirit?

He has never chosen. He stays here and watches the others.

Dexx pulled a half smile. Kind of explains why he didn’t like Cooper so much.

Bound to the earth here is painful.

How do you know?

Because he said it. Did you not listen, cub? Hattie scrunched her brows together as if saying it should have been obvious.

Maybe. But only to her. Shut up, fat cat. Let’s get moving.

Hattie stood and took a step. The ridge vanished, and a forest appeared.
