Melissa

Melissa’s heart was still beating faster than usual when she made up the guest bedroom for herself, fingers trembling slightly as she fluffed the pillows. When she turned around, Hunter was standing in the doorway, holding one of his t-shirts.

“This should work as a nightgown,” he said, handing it to her.

To Melissa’s surprise, the brothers hadn’t even jokingly asked her to join them in their beds. Today, at least. The kiss between her and Hale, and the way Hunter’s touch had made her feel was still clear in her mind.

So clear in fact, that her panties were still soaking wet and a hollow need pulsated in the pit of her stomach. Looking at Hunter, standing in the doorway looking as delicious as ever, didn’t help.

“Thank you,” she replied. “I’m sorry if it looked like I was freaking out earlier. It’s just that after Desmond… He gave me cause for caution, you know?” she asked, trying to find the right words and failing.

“You don’t need to apologize. I have an ex or two who I’d rather not think about,” Hunter answered. “Desmond better hope I never run into him, though. What kind of a man puts a ring on a woman’s finger and then lets her down in the worst way?” he shook his head.

Melissa hadn’t expected that sentiment from him. He seemed to be the poster child for wealthy playboys all over the world. But then again, sleeping around and making a commitment to someone were very different things, and with Hunter, the distinction seemed very clear.

“I’m sure you won’t run into him,” she replied.

He’s probably already left the country, or the cops would have found him by now, she thought to herself, but didn’t say aloud.

“But either way. Talking about it did make me feel better. So thanks,” she smiled.

“No problem. You have a good night. Once the storm clears in the morning, we can try and dig out that car of yours,” he replied.

As he started to turn and leave, Melissa couldn’t help but reach out and stop him.

“Wait. I wanted to ask you something… It’s about what Hale said, earlier. About soul mates?”

“I thought you might be curious about that,” Hunter grinned, looking down at her hand, still holding on to his forearm.

Feeling warmth spread up her body, she quickly snatched her hand away. But the feeling remained, made only stronger by the way Hunter seemed to be staring straight into her soul.

“Since the existence of shifters became public knowledge, you’ve no doubt heard some things about us,” he started, looking to her for confirmation.

“Yes,” she nodded. “You can turn into animals, obviously. Then there are the heightened senses, like strength and smell.”

“Right. But you’ve heard shifters mate for life?”

“I wasn’t sure if that one was true…”

“It is,” he assured her. “Many think it’s fate that brings that special person our way. But whatever the case, meeting your mate is a pretty big deal. There’s an immediate connection, which only grows stronger as time goes on.
