Chapter Nine
Lori rushed through town toward the police station, choosing to ignore the looks from those she passed along the way. Chief Sullivan would undoubtedly dismiss her, but now that things were getting out of hand, Lori was determined to make him listen. After all, that was what he was there for, right? To protect and serve? Lori grunted at the irony and pushed on.
The front door of the station nearly hit the wall as she charged in. Sheâd pushed it a little harder than sheâd expected, as hot pangs of anger lashed at her cheeks. Her gaze fixed on Sullivan, who had yet to look away from his computer.
She leaned against the front desk, face as red as a brick, eyes squinting, and brewing anger like a storm out at sea. Even though she stood in stony silence, he must have heard her come in but hadnât acknowledged that fact. Not that it would keep her from her objective.
âI need to talk to you, Chief.â
Sullivan kept his gaze firmly on the computer screen, his bottom lip protruding as if heâd read something he disagreed with. He gave it a few seconds before he replied, and when he did, his tone and demeanor lacked any enthusiasm. âIf this is about the mugging, I donât have an update for you. Youâll have toââ
âActually, itâs about a young woman Iâve just seen assaulted, and I fear for her future safety.â Lori said this loud enough to make heads turn, hoping to embarrass some effort from the police chief. âWe need to talk right now, or those guys might take it further than just a slap. You donât want that. Or do you, Chief? A ladyâs blood on your hands?â
Chief Sullivan turned, ire lighting up his eyes like Times Square. He scratched the short stubble on his cheek and flexed his jaw muscles as his face tightened. His chest rose and fell with obvious anger, his nostrils flaring as he ignored the questioning looks from his colleagues. âFine. This better be good.â
Lori grinned, but she stifled it when she realized it might look sly. She didnât enjoy putting people in positions like this, but if the chief of police wouldnât take notice, then who would? She had to do something, even if he wouldnât.
Sullivan grabbed a thick stack of files and opened the door on the side of the counter. Lori followed in silence as he escorted her through the station. Officers swarmed around their messy desks, where collections of coffee cups piled up. Lori thought it strange that a town so small could have so many officers working at once. She kept quiet, following the chief until she was led into a small office in the back.
âSit down, maâam,â Sullivan said, dropping the files with a thump.
He locked the door and slumped into his own more comfortable-looking chair on the opposite side of the desk. He shifted his large frame, and the seat squealed and groaned as he maneuvered himself. He took the sidearm from its holster and placed it on the desk, then dropped a pair of handcuffs beside it.
