Somehow, I woke up beside a crackling fire outside the gnarly wizard's house.
"What the"
"Ah, you're awake. Sorry about that, bit of an oopsie." Mawr grinned sheepishly.
"What happened? Ugh, my head feels fuzzy. You been playing tricks on me, old man?" I asked gruffly. I hated all this wizard crap. Wands and staffs and bloody dusty tomes next to skulls. Never was my thing.
"Sorry, I put the kibosh on a fella a few centuries ago and now it's just a habit to leave a ward up when I'm out and about. Runs itself, and it's usually just me here. What's a poor old man to do?"
"Give a warning to guests?"
"Haha, you always were very funny. Wild, but funny. Did you learn what you needed to know?" Mawr poked the fire with a stick, just because you have to, don't you? Law of fire or something. If it's lit, mess with it.
"I think so. Basically, he's gonna be a handful. He needs Necro blood now and then to keep the fire burning and to fulfill his potential, and will go from being daft as my unicorn to being as grumpy as me."
"That's dragons for you. Be warned, Necrosoph, dragons are unruly creatures. Very dangerous. They have a mind of their own. They are not like pets. They are smarter than us. Know things we never can, and you must keep him close or he will forget all about you, or think nothing of destroying you. They are loyal until their last breath, but only if you keep that bond tight. They must be family, or they will be your enemy."
"Yeah, I know." I scratched my head. "I'm kind of wishing I had never started this. Okay, I love the little guy, but I have to think of my daughter."
"He is a boon for any Necro. She will do well with such a companion. Just ensure he knows who's boss. She must assert her power over him regularly."
"I'll insist on it. So, what's for supper?"
"All in good time. First, a gift."
"Whoa there! Oh no you don't. This isn't some damn quest where I level up every time I meet someone from the past, no matter what you say. Come on, gnarly old man in the woods giving me the power of what? Invisibility? Magic doors? A wand? I don't want a wand. I don't do magic. I do Soph. Hard as fuck and no messing about. That's me."
"As I always knew it would be. You hated the spells, the whispers, the wands and crystals even when a lad. No, it is nothing like that. Although," his eyes twinkled, "I do have a nice wand if you're interested?"
"No thanks. I've got enough on my plate as it is."
"Very well. Then what would you like? Just out of interest. Before I offer you my gift."
"Can't say I've ever thought about it."
"Liar," he laughed. He could see right through me.
"Can you help me to read minds? See the past and the future?"
"I can do those things. Do you want me to?" He leaned forward, studied me intently.
