take it seriously? Well, because they are closer to death, am I right? They need to get their houses in order. Whereas you all have plenty of time. You can keep on playing and living a thoughtless life, and repent next year, can't you?"

"Praise the Lord!" someone said half-mockingly.

"I will if you will," Lucee responded. "Now if I were a fire and brimstone preacher, I'd point out that any of you can die at any time. It's true, but I'm not trying to sell insurance here. I'm not selling anything. I'm giving it away."

"I'll take some." I looked at the source of this voice, for it wasn't the first time he had spoken back to her. He wore a baseball cap and a relaxed grin. I realized that most of them probably knew Lucee and she knew them.

"Hang on, it's coming. So I'm not going to stand here with water soaking my skivvies and tell you that you might die next week or next month or tomorrow.

What worries me, young men and not so young men, is that you are all half-dead already. Look at your lives. What is missing?"

"Money!" the baseball cap called out.

"Yes, I'd expect that is on the top of your list," she agreed. "Sex, too, perhaps?"

"Yes, please."

A wisp of a smile danced on Lucee's mouth and played with the corners of her eyes. "Let me sum up your lives, shall I? It's all about you, what you want, what you need. And what are your priorities? Sports? Players from all over the country gather in one city, get paid by a rich guy, and somehow it matters to you that this team wins over another."

"Go Red Sox!" someone on the other side of the small crowd called out.

"And if it's not sports, it's women. Yes, you spare us some of your attention, and we appreciate it. But it's also a sport, isn't it? The idea is to score, right?"

"Don't take that away from us, Lucee."

She held up her arms. "Hey, I'm not taking, I'm giving. Just stop me if I'm wrong. So most of the time you're trying to score, and if you do, maybe you tell each other about it. And if you like it, maybe you go back for more. If she likes it because you are on your best behavior, she'll let you. Then later on, maybe you'll break up because you aren't ready for commitment and she is, or because another woman catches your eye, another game to play in another stadium. Why get serious about one woman when there are so many? And the sports are always there to go back to, and your friends to compare notes with.

"And have I mentioned alcohol? Isn't that a big part of your lives? Isn't that why sports bars are big now, a place where you can find sports, booze and women?

How perfect a life am I describing?"

"Pretty perfect, Lucee," Mr. Baseball Cap said.

"Great. Leave right now if you want to keep believing that,"
