CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Get Shoskan and Vulgan to kill each other. Sure, we could do that.

Kale called the meeting through a gunshot, which was the signal he and his so-called father had agreed on before setting out on this voyage. Kale ordered the sails down to allow the Sea Goddess to catch up, and his grumbling crew assembled on deck as Shoskan did just that. He had pulled them out of their lunch feast, and their food would get cold, but we couldn’t wait.

The massive ship pulled up beside us and stopped with several splashes and creaks. Kale’s vessel shifted as it displaced water, and I wondered if that was intentional by Shoskan. He loved his intimidation tactics.

At last, I stood beside Kale and in front of the crew of two dozen men behind us. Beezi, I knew, had stayed in the crow’s nest to observe the proceedings. She would keep low and out of sight.

“Kallen. Has anything new developed?”

Shoskan himself stood above us, as he always did, and waited. His angry blue eyes once again took that stormy, dangerous shade, and he loomed like a thunderstorm, ready to strike. The pirate king, as if he wasn’t imposing enough, also grasped the handle of his sword.

Bork stood just behind Shoskan, out of sight, and I knew I couldn’t use him to get what we wanted this time. Not unless I could get him face to face. But once again, he seemed nervous. He swallowed every so often, and the older pirate’s posture had changed. His neck seemed to have shrunk. No, he was holding his shoulders closer to his ears.

Was he worried about Shoskan’s actions, too?

Was the rest of his crew?

But I couldn’t tell. Most remained on the rigging, adjusting sails and keeping the ship in place.

Shoskan glanced at me once and then turned his anger toward Kale.

“Yes.” Kale puffed out his chest in typical Kale fashion. “Nar has been working on seeing through the veil of death. She had a breakthrough.”

“You have found Vulgan and his land crew.” Shoskan’s tone dripped with disgust as he turned his gaze on me.

I hated I had no advantage over the pirate king in a fight, or anywhere else. And that I had to lie about my so-called breakthrough. “Yes. I’ve been working on seeing through the veil of death, and I wasn’t sure I could. But after I spent a long time focusing, I opened my eyes and I could see through it, for a few seconds.” I couldn’t tell Shoskan that I could do it all the time, or I’d never hold up this lie, or that I had to have Beezi with me to do it. “There are several jagged islands ahead, cloaked by Nyla’s magic, and one bigger island that has Vulgan’s new ship docked. It’s that way.” I pointed over the railing, in the general direction of where we’d spotted our enemy. Ugh, why couldn’t I remember all the directional sailing terms that Lilian had taught us?

The pirate king didn’t seem to care.
