A Hasty Generalization is drawing a generalization from too few specific examples. Some friends of mine vacationed in Florida for a week, and it was unusually cold for the entire time of their visit. It would be a hasty generalization for them to conclude that Florida has a cold climate. Their experience was atypical. One week is simply not enough time to tell what the weather is generally like. Now, if I spent five years living in Florida, it would not be a hasty generalization for me to conclude that the weather is generally warm and humid.

Watch for the fallacy of the hasty generalization in origins debates. “Creationists are dishonest. I once knew this creationist who lied left and right” is a hasty generalization. Assuming that the critic’s claim about this particular creationist is true, it does not follow that creationists are generally dishonest.
