Chapter Six: Gold

My mind flips back and forth all night while I try to sleep, but it has been no use. I’m awake, wide awake, and nothing I’d so far done has helped.

All the sleep tricks I’ve learned over the years are turning out to be useless, so I’m stuck staring at my own ceiling while I debate with myself over what happened.

Part of me thinks that having sex with Diamond was probably a big mistake. I might be her landlord soon, if the investors approve Lux as one of the businesses going into the new condo, but I’m starting to doubt that’ll happen.

And that makes us sleeping together even worse.

Not that I regret it, not even a little bit, but if they turn her club down then she’ll really think I was using her for sex and that’s the last thing I want. In fact, what I want most is to see her again.

Instead of sheep or counting backwards, my mind keeps going back to Diamond’s soft, chocolatey skin. Her perfect, dark nipples. Her long black hair. That thick, amazing ass. She’s exactly what I’ve always wanted in a woman – gorgeous, smart, and strong, and now I’m worried that I’ve pushed her away by coming on too strong too soon or something.

That was exactly why I left when she asked me to. I hadn’t wanted to. I’d wanted to stay and help her close the bar. I wanted to get to know her better. I wanted to make sure she knew she wasn’t just a one night stand or a simple screw and show her that I’m not that kind of man.

But she’d asked that I go, and so that’s what I did and now I’m stuck regretting it while I try in vain to get some sleep.

My thoughts bounce between desire and regret for most of the night. One minute I’m thinking I should call and leave a message at the bar, the next I’m worrying that Diamond hates me and I’ve blown my shot with the goddess. Both are the last thing I want, but at least it keeps my mind off the fact that only a few hours ago I had a gun in my face.

If anyone finds out how over the moon you are about her, you’re fucked, I tell myself as I lie in bed. It’s completely, one hundred percent the truth. If my investors find out I slept with the owner of one of the businesses I’m trying to get into the new condo, they’ll lose their respect for me and even worse, they might pull their funding for the project.

That is, if they even think about starting to consider adding an urban nightclub to the condo. I already know that will be a challenge, and it’ll only get worse if they know I slept with the owner.

Even in the dead of night, I know I have to keep my feelings for Diamond a secret. I didn’t make my money by falling
