Chapter 17

Evelyn

Devlin watching me most of the night is disturbing but also fascinating.

The blood in my veins hasn’t cooled once. It’s as hot as if he were physically touching me. So, I’ve pretended not to notice, kept my attention on Holland, and refused even the slightest glance Devlin’s way.

I never thanked him for getting tonight back on track, and I probably never will. I secretly acknowledge that I was partially to blame for what happened. Devlin didn’t exactly kiss himself, and he didn’t force himself on me. I joined in willingly.

I was weak.

I’m always weak inside when it comes to him, and I think he knows it. But I won’t let my vice be my undoing. The raw chemistry between us has to fade at some point if we keep our distance. It has to. I'm not the woman who screws her boss.

Holland's pinky flicks mine on the table as we sit people-watching. I came. I conquered. And at this point, I just want to be done. It's getting late, and the crowd is slowly dwindling. I only wish they would ebb a little faster so I can leave.

I give Charity props for her years of service. Planning was no easy feat.

“A penny for your thoughts,” Holland says.

“You don't want my thoughts tonight,” I said, smiling. My thoughts are struggling to remain pure.

I haven't told Holland about the kiss, that Devlin and I were the cause of all the commotion because I can hardly believe it myself. I also haven't told him about Devlinʼs impending promotion.

“Try me,” Holland says, linking our pinkies.

I look around the space at the open ears and eyes, knowing if I spill, one of them is bound to scoop it up.

Besides, Mr. Sawyer is only a few seats away, and Devlin is on my right side. I don't know why I thought this seating arrangement was a good idea.

From the corner of my eye, I spy the back of Devlinʼs head. He's conversing with Mr. Sawyer and his guests, but I'm no fool. He's a multitasker, and I'm sure his ears are as peeled as everyone else's.

“Maybe later,” I replied to Holland.

Devlinʼs leg briefly brushes mine beneath the table, jolting me. My body stiffens, eyes popping for a second.

“You alright?” Holland asks, covering my hand with his.

“I'm fine. Just caught a chill,” I smile.

Devlin laughs with Sawyer and the others, and his leg brushes mine again. I want to ask if he’s doing it on purpose, but I don’t want the unwanted attention from everyone around us.

“You sure?” Holland asks. “You look a little flushed.”

“Maybe a little irritated.” I clear my throat, righting myself in the chair while discreetly knocking my knee against Devlin’s leg.

Holland gently squeezes my hand. “I’m a bit tired myself. It’s been quite a night.”

“You don’t have to stay. I could call an Uber.”

“What kind of guy would I be if I left you here? We came together. We should leave together.” Holland yawns.

“Don’t be ridiculous. I’m not a child,” I said.

“If I may,” Devlin says next to me.
