Chapter Sixteen
âI donât want to hurt you.â
The deep voice came from the silhouette backing slowly away from my bedside. In the moonlight from the window, I watched the man sit on the chair in the corner. Even in the shadows, his eyes were bright and topaz blue.
Something weighed on my chest. Looking down, I grabbed the handle of the heavy dagger laid between my breasts.
âItâs a shadow blade, one of the only weapons in existence that can kill me. Call it a gesture of goodwill.â
My spirit slowly sat up. âGoodwill exhibited by your choking me out the other day?â
âI didnât choke you. I simply disrupted the neural transmissions in your cerebral cortex. You fainted.â Balancing his elbows on the armrests, he steepled his fingertips. âI only wanted to talk to you.â
âSo talk. Start with a name.â
âYou know my name.â
âOrion?â
He nodded.
âDo you want me dead?â
âWhat?â He sounded genuinely confused.
âIt was your fault I was almost creamed by a Tesla.â
âThat was an accident.â
âYou almost got me killed.â
âAre you dead?â
I scowled.
âThen I didnât almost do anything.â His eyes darkened. âIf Iâd wanted you dead, you would be.â
âIâm not afraid of you.â
âYou donât even know who I am. Or what Iâm capable of.â
My eyes were still locked on his. âNeither do you.â
Amusement tugged at the corners of his lips. âGood thing weâre on the same side then.â
I relaxed a bit. âHow did you make me faint?â
âEvery scion has a nerve here.â He pressed two fingers between his clavicles. âIt functions like an emergency off switch.â He pointed to my broken alarm clock on the nightstand. âItâs similar to the way I assume you shorted out your clock.â
âSo youâve just been hanging around my condo, waiting to short-circuit my brain?â
âYes.â
I was surprised by his candor. âWho are you? Or what are you?â
âHuman, same as you.â
My brow pinched.
âWell, at least I was human, once upon a time.â He stood and walked to the door, pulling something from his pocket. It was a black glove. He slipped it on and flipped the light switch.
Aside from the unearthly blue eyes, he looked human enough. Dark-brown crew cut, athletic build, strong and scruffy jaw. He wore dark blue jeans and a fitted white T-shirt. âNow Iâm a guardian of the Boundary and Imera.â
âOK, but why are you in my bedroom?â
âBecause your world is at risk. The hypnox, have you found its origin yet?â he asked.
âIâd hoped you could tell me.â
âTrust me. I wish I knew.â
âI donât trust you.â
âYou donât have to trust me, but can we talk?â
I looked at my body open-mouth breathing on the bed. âYes, but letâs go somewhere else. This is creepy.â
Using the glove, he opened my bedroom door. âLetâs go outside. Thereâs something I want to show you.â
âOK.â I took the dagger, just in case.
He followed me through the living room, and at the sliding-glass door, I reached for the handle. It didnât move. Orion walked straight through the glass, fighting a smile at me as he went.
I groaned. This is going to take some getting used to.
