Chapter 17
Felix’s POV
“Logan, I want to talk with you,” I hear Brian say and there's an undertone of barely restrained violence in his voice. I feel Logan’s body posture change rapidly from relaxed to tense as he sits beside me on the sofa. I watch the emotion drain from his eyes leaving them hollow and blank, as if he’s already preparing himself for the pain Brian will inflict. He allows his hair to fall forward over his face to hide his empty expression and stands up, looking down at the ground. I wrap my hand around his wrist but he looks down at me with those empty eyes and shakes his head as if he’s already given up and resigned himself to the beating. I release him, but only so I can stand up and follow them out of the room. I am not leaving him alone with Brian, I say sternly in my mind.
“You need to go,” Brian says, looking at me once we’re inside the bedroom.
“No,” I reply simply, moving to stand beside Logan who’s looking down at the floor still. I watch the emotions pass over Brian’s face, wishing I could reach out and take Logan’s hand and pull him to me, to let him know he's okay, that I'm here for him.
“You’re stealing all my friends,” Brian spits at Logan. Logan flinches and my hands curl into fists at my sides. I want to reassure him, tell him I won’t let him get hurt.
“First Felix, then William and now Jerry. Do you plan to take Andy next?” Brian carries on recklessly.
“Maybe they’re just realising who you really are,” Logan replies quietly. His eyes widen and he looks shocked that he spoke up, as if he doesn’t believe the voice had come from him. I don’t expect Brian to hear him, I barely do and I’m standing right next to him, but Brian sucks in a breath – as if he too is shocked – before he paces the last few feet to us, pushing me roughly out of his way. I watch him bring his fist back to punch Logan, but move quick enough to place myself in front of him and shove Brian with all my strength so he lays sprawled at my feet, looking undignified and absolutely furious. I hear Logan’s sudden sharp intake of breath at my unexpected action and feel him shiftily nervously behind me.
“You bastard!” Brian shouts, sending me a threatening look as he gets up. Brian – who I once thought was a great friend and generally a nice person – is stalking towards me with hatred in his eyes. Before I can work out how to respond I see Logan’s long auburn hair in front of me as he moves to stand between me and Brian. His head is up and he’s no longer hiding. Brian stops and gapes at him. There’s a moment when they face each other, Brian looking unsure and angry while Logan has a protective, confident air about him.
