Stacey

A nurse appears and gives me a couple of pills in a little white paper cup. She is oriental and has a cute, heart-shaped face.

‘What are these?’

‘They’ll make you feel better, Stacey.’

‘But I don’t feel ill! There’s nothing wrong with me!’ I wring my hands and try to get out of bed.

‘Stacey, don’t make this difficult. Dr Patel wants you to have these. He is a very good doctor and he’ll come and visit you when you’re on the ward. If you don’t take them, we might have to give you an injection to calm you down, and I’m sure you don’t want that, do you?’

She is talking to me as if I am a child. I feel like I’m stuck in an alternate reality. I didn’t do all those awful things they accused me of. I would never, ever hurt my darling children. I love them more than life itself. Or do I? If I love them more than life itself, then would I want to take them with me when I leave life? My head is a jumbled whirl.

I tip the pills into my mouth, take a sip of water from a plastic cup and swallow them together.

‘Well done, Stacey,’ the nurse says. ‘A couple of the porters will be along shortly to take you to the ward.’

‘What ward?’ I ask. But the nurse has already left the room.
