CHAPTER XXI

I was pleased with the beefed-up security for my operation. Now, it was time to work on Boris’ troubled marriage. I asked Alice if she had made contact with Mehmet’s ex-wife, Ayşe. Indeed, she had.

Alice had met Ayşe at a large function, and they had agreed to have lunch. At lunch, Alice told her that she had a friend in the diplomatic community who had been seeing Mehmet, and the relationship was getting serious. Alice asked her if she would agree to meet with the woman and give her the lowdown on Mehmet. Ayşe said, “Whoever the woman is, she is getting ready to step into quicksand. I don’t harbor a grudge or bad feelings toward Mehmet, but there are some serious flaws in his character that any potential wife should know. And if she is not Turkish, those flaws will be magnified.”

Alice told Ayşe that she was having Olga over for lunch at home the following day. She intended for the two women to meet at the lunch, but it didn’t work out that way. Olga told Alice that she was too embarrassed to open up about her relationship with Mehmet to a former wife. She said she would come across as some sort of a ditzy highschooler and begged Alice to do her bidding for her. She also said she was expecting the worst about Mehmet and had all but decided to end the relationship. Alice did not wish to play the role of an intermediator and would have normally declined to participate, but this was for an operational purpose, and since she didn’t get many opportunities to help her husband, she agreed.

So, Alice met up again with Ayşe and told her that the other woman was too embarrassed to question her directly. “I don’t blame her,” said Ayşe. “It’s not something I would be comfortable doing, and I’m very uninhibited. So, tell me. What does she want to know?”

“Essentially, she wants to know who left whom and why. Were you content in the marriage, and is there some major fault with Mehmet that he disguises until after the wedding?”

“Alice, I’m going to give it to you straight. I was head over heels in love with Mehmet. He was a great lover and very attentive before we married. That continued for a while after we were married, but before too long, he began to treat me more like a servant. Bring me this, bring me that, take my clothes to the cleaners. That was annoying, but I could live with it. What I couldn’t live with was his roving eyes and endless desire to bed someone new. As soon as I was certain that he was sleeping with other women, I told him I was done, and I left him the following day. The funny thing is, he never tried to talk me out of it. I think he simply is not the marrying kind of man. I still kind of have a soft spot for him, but I couldn’t stay married to him.
