CHAPTER SIX
KATE was in her element planning the wedding. In the absence of anyone she treasured more, Liv asked her to be her matron of honour.
âI meant to ask you yesterday, but we ran out of time,â Liv said. âI donât have a sister, and we had some great fun at college before I dropped out. You were my best friend, reallyâwell, apart from Ben, but I canât ask him to be a bridesmaid, heâll be a bit busy!â she said with a grin, and Kate chuckled.
âJust so long as I can wear something simple and not a meringue, because Iâll definitely look like a pavlova!â she said with a laugh.
âWe could always hire a dressâperhaps we should ring up and see if they do a dress to go with mine?â Liv suggested. âWe didnât even have time to look yesterday.â So they rang the shop, and, yes, they did the bridesmaidâs version in a variety of colours for hire.
âIâll go in and try them and sort it out,â Kate promised. âHow excitingâIâm going to be matron of honour to a famous model!â
âHuh! Ex-famous model,â Liv reminded her, handing her another cup of coffee. âOr do I mean infamous? And anyway, there wonât be any publicity.â
âYou think?â Kate said with raised eyebrows. âBenâs quite a mover and shaker in the business world. I think you might find if the press gets wind of it, youâll get publicity, especially if they put two and two together and come up with both of you, if you see what I mean.â
Liv did. Still, there was only little over a week to go, and surely none of their few guests would spill the beans?
âHave you told Oscar?â Kate asked, raiding a grape from the fruit bowl on the kitchen table.
âNo. On a need-to-know basis, I thought he didnât,â she said drily, and Kate chuckled.
âYou really hate him, donât you?â
âHe didnât do me any favours, Kate,â Liv said quietly. âHe stole everything I had, everything I wasâmy money, my confidence, my enjoyment of lifeâhe took it all. His only saving grace is that he gave me my children. Itâs the only thing that stopped me leaving him ages ago.â
âAnd now youâve got BenâI always thought he was gorgeous, but in all the time weâve lived next to him, I never for a moment thought he could be your Ben that you talked about at college.â
Her Ben? The Ben sheâd idolised as a girl? Heâd moved on since then, had his heart broken, become a recluse, almost. He was the same in many ways, but the sparkle seemed to have gone out of him and she didnât seem to have what it would take to put it back.
âI still canât believe itâs going to happen,â Liv said thoughtfully.
âWell, it is. Youâve bought the dress, ordered the caterersâyou have ordered the caterers, havenât you?â
Liv nodded and smiled. âYes, Kate, we have ordered the caterers.â
âAnd youâre definitely going to marry the most gorgeous man itâs ever been my privilege to meet.
