CHAPTER SIX

KATE was in her element planning the wedding. In the absence of anyone she treasured more, Liv asked her to be her matron of honour.

‘I meant to ask you yesterday, but we ran out of time,’ Liv said. ‘I don’t have a sister, and we had some great fun at college before I dropped out. You were my best friend, really—well, apart from Ben, but I can’t ask him to be a bridesmaid, he’ll be a bit busy!’ she said with a grin, and Kate chuckled.

‘Just so long as I can wear something simple and not a meringue, because I’ll definitely look like a pavlova!’ she said with a laugh.

‘We could always hire a dress—perhaps we should ring up and see if they do a dress to go with mine?’ Liv suggested. ‘We didn’t even have time to look yesterday.’ So they rang the shop, and, yes, they did the bridesmaid’s version in a variety of colours for hire.

‘I’ll go in and try them and sort it out,’ Kate promised. ‘How exciting—I’m going to be matron of honour to a famous model!’

‘Huh! Ex-famous model,’ Liv reminded her, handing her another cup of coffee. ‘Or do I mean infamous? And anyway, there won’t be any publicity.’

‘You think?’ Kate said with raised eyebrows. ‘Ben’s quite a mover and shaker in the business world. I think you might find if the press gets wind of it, you’ll get publicity, especially if they put two and two together and come up with both of you, if you see what I mean.’

Liv did. Still, there was only little over a week to go, and surely none of their few guests would spill the beans?

‘Have you told Oscar?’ Kate asked, raiding a grape from the fruit bowl on the kitchen table.

‘No. On a need-to-know basis, I thought he didn’t,’ she said drily, and Kate chuckled.

‘You really hate him, don’t you?’

‘He didn’t do me any favours, Kate,’ Liv said quietly. ‘He stole everything I had, everything I was—my money, my confidence, my enjoyment of life—he took it all. His only saving grace is that he gave me my children. It’s the only thing that stopped me leaving him ages ago.’

‘And now you’ve got Ben—I always thought he was gorgeous, but in all the time we’ve lived next to him, I never for a moment thought he could be your Ben that you talked about at college.’

Her Ben? The Ben she’d idolised as a girl? He’d moved on since then, had his heart broken, become a recluse, almost. He was the same in many ways, but the sparkle seemed to have gone out of him and she didn’t seem to have what it would take to put it back.

‘I still can’t believe it’s going to happen,’ Liv said thoughtfully.

‘Well, it is. You’ve bought the dress, ordered the caterers—you have ordered the caterers, haven’t you?’

Liv nodded and smiled. ‘Yes, Kate, we have ordered the caterers.’

‘And you’re definitely going to marry the most gorgeous man it’s ever been my privilege to meet.
