HE WAS GOING TO KISS HER.
Tyler didnât even think about the impulse, he only went with it. His leg throbbed, his wrist ached, gravel and rocks dug into his stomach, but he didnât give them a thought When Erin lifted her head, he leaned in and hitched himself a little closer.
This was the kind of moment he hadnât experienced in years. He felt exactly as he had when heâd lowered himself to the bare back of a bronc, wrapped the rope around his right hand and put his left hand in the air. The anticipation was the same as when he had given the nod to the crew to open the chute allowing the bronc to explode into the ring where he would try his best to buck Tyler off his backâand maybe break the manâs neck.
Tyler knew this, felt the surge of anticipation and touched his lips to hers.
She could have moved away. She could have splashed the salty water in his face. That would have stopped him cold, but she didnât budge. Instead those curious green eyes of hers watched him, asking what he was going to do and why he was going to do it.
Damned if he knew.
When he brushed her lips, he discovered they were as soft as heâd suspected they would be. He turned his head and tested the skin of her cheek. Soft there, too. He came back to her mouth, pressed his lips to hers and lingered. There was a moment of resistance in her, a brief stiffness in her jaw, but he didnât let her have time to allow it to grow. He brought his arm around so that she was held firmly against the slick rocks, exactly where he wanted her.
His lips found hers, pressing firmly, molding her softness to his. She tasted sweet, womanlyâdelightful, in fact. She didnât respond, but at this moment, he didnât care. Right now, this was for him. He thought about waking yesterday and finding her staring at him, awareness in her eyes. He thought about seeing her body, slim and graceful, as sheâd lowered herself into the washtub. Those had fed his eyes. Now he fed his taste.
He wanted more so he took it, giving the barest thought to recalling that only the night before, he hadnât wanted this at all. His fingers slid beneath the straps of her tank top to trace the bones of her shoulders, to skim over the velvet of her skin. He slipped the strap down, then tore his lips from hers to bury them in the bend of her neck.
Shivers trembled through her. He could hear her breath catch in her throat. He took that as a promising sign, until she said, âTyler, donât. Donât do this.â
He could feel the tremble in her hands as they floated upward to push him away.
Reluctantly he lifted his head and looked into eyes that were troubled, edged with worry and surprise.
âWhy did you do that?â she asked, her breathy voice marked by accusation.
