Chapter Six

Harper felt sick. Part of her feared that she was going to vomit into her hand, despite the situation. She always had her doubts about Andrew, and she had mentally thought she was prepared to deal with the concept of him being the one who took Beth. Now, though, faced with the possibility of that being true, Harper didn’t know how to react.

She shook her head and kept her hands glued to her mouth to prevent her from talking, or making any kinds of sounds.

No matter how angry I am, I cannot let it mess up this case.

Suddenly, her phone started buzzing with an incoming call.

She nearly screamed from fear. It was pressed against the wall, so it sent the buzzing noise through the wall. She quickly fished the phone from her pocket, hoping to God that she wouldn’t drop it in the bathtub. If she did that, she would be dead for sure.

Jill.

Harper watched the screen flash as she listened to the sounds outside the bathroom. It sounded like Andrew was still on the phone outside with whoever the heck he was talking to.

Maybe she could answer the phone call…

After all, he couldn’t hear her if she whispered. Right?

She answered, pressing the phone to her ear.

“Hello?” She hissed.

“Dang it, Harper, where the heck have you been?!” Jill barked. “I’ve been worried sick about you!”

“Keep your voice down,” Harper ordered as silently as she could.

“Why are you whispering!?” Jill ordered. “What is going on?”

Harper steadied herself. She wasn't prepared to share this information with anyone, especially since telling Jill her plans would implicate her friend if she got caught. However, if she didn't tell Jill what was going on at that exact moment at that exact time, she knew that Jill wouldn't stop pestering her. Jill was a good cop, too. There was always a chance that she would figure it all out too.

So, Harper took a deep breath and sighed.

“I’m in Andrew’s house.”

“But he isn’t home yet,” Jill whispered. “He just left like five minutes ago. How did you get in?”

Harper pressed her lips together and sighed.

“I broke in.”

“You WHAT?!”

“Shut up,” Harper hissed. “He’ll hear you.”

“Oh my God, he’s home!? Where are you!?”

“No time for that now,” Harper hissed. “I’ve uploaded photos I need you to see to my cloud. I’ll share my cloud with you so you can see it.”

“What!?” Jill was freaking out, Harper could tell. Of course, this was a normal reaction to the news that Jill just received, so she couldn’t blame her friend.

"You need to look at them," Harper whispered. "He's been lying about everything. There are no daughters, no wife. His wife is the missing woman from 2008 we couldn't find. He got so cocky that he put a poster of her on the wall."

Jill was silent for a moment. In the background, Harper could hear Andrew talking with his phone partner. "What?"

“I know this is shocking,” Harper tried to calm her friend down but also knew her priority right now, in the back of her mind, was staying safe wherever she was.
