The funeral was a solemn affair; the church was packed with the firm’s employees, as well as friends of the family. Brian Hall sat at the front with his niece Pauline. Although they were sympathetic about their loss, most of the workers were privately relieved that Andrew wouldn’t be taking over the reins at the company. They were all invited to the local hotel for refreshments after the funeral.

Mike was in a cluster at one side of the hired room, talking with three or four other managers, when he felt a tap on his back. He turned round; it was Pauline.

“One down, and one to go,” she said flippantly. “I’ll miss Andrew, for all his faults. He was my cousin, after all.”

“I’m sorry for your loss, but everyone is glad that you –”

“I know. And I’ll be glad when everything can settle down again. Now there’s the simple formality of having Brad cremated. I’m not having this elaborate ceremonial; just me, with a couple of friends. You could come, if you wanted to.”

“I never knew the man.”

“But there would be some symbolism in having you there, don’t you see? You’d be taking over one of his functions in life – except he wasn’t able to perform.”

Mike realised then that she’d been drinking. Perhaps heavily.

“So... it won’t be long, then? Before you and I....”

“We can do it now, if you like. Come upstairs with me. I can get a room here. Like I said before, they’re very discreet.” She threw him an enticing smile.

After catching Ruth in the middle of another gambling session – on a laptop that had been concealed – Mike had reached the stage where he didn’t care about such noble thoughts as loyalty any more. In that instant, he felt he’d had enough. “Count me in.”

She whispered in his ear. “Go to reception in five minutes. Give them your name, and ask for Ms. Gibson’s room. I’ll see you up there.”

Pauline drifted away towards the door, smiling at the guests, and Mike resumed his place in the group with whom he had been speaking. When he judged five minutes had elapsed, he went to the hotel reception and was given the number of the room she had booked.

When he knocked on the door, he heard her unlock it and her head peered round.

He smiled. “Mrs. Gibson, I presume?”

She opened the door to let him in; once inside, he turned round as she locked the door again and saw she was naked.

She flung herself into his arms. “Mike!” she said. “If you knew how long I’d waited for this! Let’s make it perfect, like the first time.”

“There’s been a big hole in my life since... since we had to split. God knows, I’ve missed you, Pauline.”

“Polly! Call me Polly again! Let’s pretend we’re young once more.”

They kissed, they caressed, they fumbled while he tried to pull off his clothes. When she realised she was preventing him from undressing, she began to help him strip. When they were both naked, they held each other close, wordless, savouring the moment.
