CHAPTER 36

Dr. Harrison stood in the doorway with a welcoming arm graciously gesturing me inside. Round spectacles reflecting the windows behind me obscured his eyes. His gray goatee was trimmed shorter than I remembered, as if he had turned hipster. All he needed was a two-inch ponytail. After hesitating, I stepped into his inner sanctum and sat at the end of a loveseat. He took a wingback opposite, steepled his fingers above his beach ball belly, and began with the standard pleasantries.

Mercury stood behind him. Is this guy going to let it go, homie?

I said, Let what go?

Mercury said, That you missed your last appointment—three years ago.

I said, He’s bigger than that. Now leave me alone so I can concentrate.

Mercury said, Concentrate? On this loser? Dr. I-Went-to-Harvard-and-You-Didn’t Harrison? He wrote a paper about you and me, y’know. Sent it in to Psych Today. Know what happened?

I said, Please. I’m trying to focus here.

Mercury said, They laughed at him. Set him up on a Zoom meeting with all the editors just to laugh in his face.

I said, That was mean.

What’d you expect from a bunch of psychos? Mercury laughed with his mouth wide open. True story, I swear.

I said, Quiet. I want to hear what he has to say.

Mercury said, Why listen to him? You’ve got me. I got your analysis right here, bruh. You’re Orpheus pining for Eurydice, that’s the start and finish to all your problems.

“You don’t want to be here,” Dr. Harrison said. “And that’s fine with me, Jacob. But Pia wants me to help you. You’ll give me a few minutes for her, won’t you?”

“That’s why I’m here.” I grinned like a madman trying to silence the voices in his head. “If she recommends your services, I’m all in.”

“First, let’s not open that box of worms with the Roman god, whatshisname, in it. We can let that come up organically if he plays a part.” He adjusted his glasses and waited for me to test him. I let it go. He continued, “I want to know the real Jacob. Let’s start at the beginning, shall we? Tell me about your childhood.”

Mercury jumped back. Did he call me ‘whatshisname?’ Did he say, ‘if he plays a part?’ Damn, boy. He thinks you’re crazy. Y’know that? You’re not crazy. He’s crazy. And you know how crazy people are—they go talking smack about you behind your back. Make everybody think you’re the one who’s crazy and a threat to his community. Y’know what you gotta do about that. Shoot this muthafucka right now. Shoot him in the head. Show him who’s crazy.

I said, Why are you worried about this guy? Wait, you think he’s going to put me on meds again and make you go away.

Mercury recoiled in shock. No I ain’t. Not at all. Cuz you wouldn’t take them. He stared at me, then leaned forward. Would you?

When I didn’t respond quickly, Dr. Harrison tried another question. “How did your parents shape you into the finest warrior in the world?”

My brain started working over Dr.
