Chapter Fifteen

Rory

“Fuck,” Bennet snaps, jolting to his feet and pacing to the other end of the room.

My heart feels like it’s dropped into my belly, the weight of his words confirming my worst suspicions.

He doesn’t want me now that he knows the truth.

He wanted to bring me out here, share some food and some laughs, and then have sex in the cabin. He probably had it all planned out in his mind.

My revelations – my virginity – has ruined everything.

I pull the hem of my dress down, even more, to cover my legs, even as instinct tells me to do the exact opposite. The neediness inside commands me to tell him it doesn’t matter. We can still have sex, virginity or not.

But I know I can’t, not so suddenly, not without him knowing how nervous I’m going to be.

Bennet stands with his back to me, his suit pulled taut between his broad shoulders, the tension causing his corded arms to twitch.

“Are you just going to stare at the wall like a weirdo?”

My voice threatens to crack with a sob, as I imagine where the rest of the evening will take us.

Is he going to ask me to leave? Is he going to give me a ride home, at least?

It’s going to be so awkward, but it’s not like I have any other choice. We’re in the middle of nowhere.

“Bennet,” I say, hating the desperate plea in my voice. “Can you at least look at me?”

He turns slowly, his strong jaw tense. His lips are pitched into a deep frown as he stares at me, his eyes difficult to read.

“Are you mad at me?”

His narrowed eyes soften and he shakes his head. “I’m not mad at you. I’m mad at the world for making you Rick’s daughter.”

“I get that. But I meant about my virginity.”

“That’s what I’m talking about,” he says gruffly, pacing the room.

“I don’t understand.”

He drops onto the couch next to me, wrapping his arm around my shoulder and pulling me into his embrace. I collapse gratefully against him, my heart giving a little flutter. Surely this must be a good sign, an indicator that he’s not done with me.

“I want to explain, but you’ll think I’m crazy,” he sighs.

“Try me”

He chuckles, causing my heart to lighten even more.

Laughter is another good sign. It has to be.

“Are you sure?” he asks.

“Bennet, I thought you were going to throw me out just now. I thought you were going to tell me I’d led you on… making you believe we were going to have wild sex and then cock blocked you at the last second.”

“Never,” he growls, his hand tightening on my shoulder. “That’s not it at all.”

“Can you blame me for thinking that?” I murmur. “The way you walked away…”

“I know, I know,” he says quickly. “But that wasn’t why. I turned away because I was about to blurt it all out.”

“Blurt what out?”

“My true feelings for you.”

My chest tightens, as though telling me this is it.

Everything I’ve dreamed of, it’s happening right now…

Don’t get ahead of yourself, I say in my mind.
