Chapter 9
“Jo, sweetheart, it’s time to wake up.”
Jolene opened her eyes, squinting against the bright sunlight streaming through the lacy white curtains. A woman was leaning over her, backlit by the warm sun. Luminous blue eyes stared at her through dark lashes, and the most kissable lips formed a perfect smile.
Jolene smiled back and traced her thumb over Christina’s full bottom lip. Christina’s lips puckered slightly, kissing the digit when it reached the center of her lips. Neither woman said anything, each content to study the other.
Jolene’s eyes made the slow voyage over Christina’s presence, her fingers dancing lightly over each point of focus. Thick black hair, flawless skin, high cheek bones, perfectly sculpted brows, and the most adorable nose comprised the face that always made Jolene’s heart flutter wildly in her chest.
She sucked in a breath as her fingers floated over the soft, creamy flesh of Christina’s throat.
She always takes my breath away.
Jolene moved her fingertips across Christina’s left shoulder, smiling as she traced the intricate lines of the tribal flowers that sprawled over the expanse of her upper arm. She smiled wider as her fingers travelled over Christina’s other tattoos, remembering each trip they’d taken to the parlor.
While Jolene only sported a few tattoos that held deep meaning for the woman, Christina’s body had become a veritable canvas of expression.
Flowers, ribbons, chemistry symbols, and phrases adorned Christina’s lithe body, each representing something close to her heart. Jolene pressed a kiss to each of the images, her lips lingering on an artist’s rendering of the chemical formula that bordered her collarbone: C8H11NO2+C10H12N2O+C43H66N12O12S2
The scientific formula for love.
“I love you, Jo,” Christina said, her lips barely moving as her voice floated through Jolene’s brain.
“I love you, too, Christie,” Jolene replied, “I’ll never stop loving you.”
Christina’s eyes narrowed, pain evident in the crystal-clear pools of blue. “Then why are you leaving me?”
Jolene frowned as a stab of agony, so strong it made her chest physically ache, hit her in the heart. “Leaving you? Baby, I’m not going anywhere.”
Tears began to fall from Christina’s cheeks, raining down on Jolene in a torrent of warm anguish. “You can’t leave me, Jolene. You promised to stay with me forever.”
“Christie,” Jolene’s throat suddenly felt sticky and thick, constricting her voice until it squeaked, “Baby, I’m not going anywhere. I promised to make you happy for the rest of my life, and I’m going to keep that promise.”
Another jolt of pain slammed into Jolene’s chest, contorting her features into a mask of torment.
“You make me happy, Jo,” Christina’s lips were no longer moving, but her voice was strong in Jolene’s mind, “You’re the only thing in my life that makes me truly happy. You can’t leave me like this.”
Jolene gasped, her vision beginning to dim as the pain struck again. She reached out, cupping Christina’s cheek in her hand as her body began to tingle uncomfortably.
“I won’t leave you, Christie,” she choked, the coppery taste of blood bold on her tongue, “I’ll make you happy again, baby. Whatever it takes, I won’t let you down.
