Chapter 12

“Hey,” Dave’s warm, deep voice sounded above the rumble of the yacht’s engine. “Are you okay?” His hand gripped her arm and helped her to her feet.

Nicole leaned into him, pressing her face into his chest, afraid to open her eyes, her throat locked around a lump the size of her fist.

“You were having a bad dream.” He smoothed the hair out of her face with one hand. “And I thought I was the only one who had those.”

She swallowed hard and dared to open her eyes. The gray light of dawn filled the sky and they were headed east toward the lightening horizon.

“Where are we? How can we be going east?” Then she glanced to the left and right and could see the dark silhouettes of land on either side.

“We’re in the Strait of San Juan de Fuca.”

“What?” She rubbed her eyes and glanced out the window again. “Between Washington State and Canada?”

He nodded, his eyes red, his face appearing tired. “I’m headed to an island in the strait.”

“Won’t there be too many people around?”

He snorted. “It’s a very small island and there aren’t many people on it.”

“What about the aerial view? Won’t we be easily detectable from above?”

“There are a lot of islands and a lot of yachts in this area. It’ll be hard to pinpoint us.”

She let go of the tension of the dream and waking in a strange place and glanced up at him. “You stayed awake all night?”

“Someone had to navigate.”

“You sleep as soon as we park this boat.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He saluted her, his hand still resting on the steering wheel. “I could use some coffee.”

“On it.” She stretched and pushed her hair behind her ears, then descended into the cabin below.

First thing she checked was the decryption program. The status bar indicated seventy-five percent complete. “Really? After running all night?” She turned to the task of making coffee, the aroma of fresh brew stimulating by itself. While she waited for the coffee, she searched the cabinets for the pots and pans, found a skillet and whipped up a couple of omelets.

By the time she returned to the pilothouse with a steaming cup of coffee, Dave was maneuvering around a small island covered in a thick forest of trees. On the eastern side, the curve of the land created a cove. The water there was still, free of the heavier swells out in the open.

“I cooked eggs and toast.”

“Sounds like heaven.

Dave slowed the yacht, bringing it to a standstill in the middle of the cove.

“We take the dingy from here.”

“You sure it’ll be safe?” The cove seemed deserted, but small enough to hem them in.

“The cabin is tucked beneath a stand of trees on a ridge. We’ll have a three-hundred-and-sixty-degree view of everything around us and it’s hard to see from the sea and above.”

“Sounds like a great place for a stronghold.”

“It is. And I’ll set up some early warning devices if we miss anything.”

“Okay. Let’s eat breakfast, I’ll pack a lunch and jam a few things into my backpack.
