Chapter Two

I didn't expect to see or hear from Kevin any time soon, if ever. So it took me unawares when he called a mere two days later on Saturday. Especially since the call wasn't for me.

Andy's face showed surprise too at first, but he became more alert as the conversation went on. "Wait, I'll ask him," he said, looking at me. "Kevin's asking if we'll drop by for coffee."

"What? Why?"

"He'd love to," Andy said into the phone.

"Hey, wait a minute," I protested, but too late. He hung up.

"Why ask me at all?" I grumbled.

"Oh c'mon, it'll be a nice walk." He was putting on his jacket and gloves already.

I couldn't forbid him to go, but there was something fishy about the whole thing, and I wanted to find out what.

When we arrived, Max and Kevin were on the sidewalk in front of their place, chatting with a neighbor, who departed just as we arrived.

Max must've done well for himself, because the house had to be worth a big bundle of money in that part of town, even in this market. And even with half of a tree blocking the driveway.

"Nice house," I told Max. "Lucky that the tree missed the roof."

"No kidding. I had the car parked out there, but moved it into the garage when the wind picked up. It would've been flattened. Of course, now I can't drive anywhere." His smile suggested no distress over the fact.

"Doesn't Kevin know how to operate a chainsaw?" I asked. He was a carpenter after all.

Kevin punched me in the shoulder. "Shhh! If that was public knowledge, not only would our long weekend have been shot, but I'd be spending a short one chopping trees. I've never liked chainsaws, anyway. They're all made for right-handed people, which I'm not. So shall we go?"

"Go where?" I asked befuddled.

"Didn't Lea tell you? That tree from the news, you know with the child skeleton, is down the next street. We'll go have a look-see."

"No. He forgot to mention it." I turned to Andy with a dirty look, but the scheming scamp was already walking down the street in animated conversation with Max.

Kevin and I took off after them, but Kevin kept stopping, checking out the damage to other people's yards, till we lagged several paces behind.

"So how did you two meet?" he asked out of the blue.

"Through an ad."

"Really? I would've never guessed you to go for the personals. What did it say? Single white gay man looking for psychic twink? Must have bubble butt?"

"Roommate wanted," I said while keeping my eye on Andy. He did have a bubble butt.

"Oh, don't tell me you're not doing it like rabbits."

I said nothing.

Kevin smirked with triumph. "That's what I thought. So not your type, but then again maybe he's exactly that. You were always a sucker for a damsel in distress, just not in men. When did you switch?"

"When did you turn into a bitch queen?" I cut back.

He shot me a sharp glare. "Oh, I dunno, I guess when I realized you'd never leave your wife for me.
