Chapter 25

After the Denali went past, Eva waited a minute before continuing to follow. A full moon lit up the road enough that she could see her way without turning on her headlights. She sped up, needing to get close enough to keep the SUV in sight. There it was. She saw the back fender as it turned in to a driveway. There was a wide spot on the side of the road. She quickly pulled over and parked. It was time to call Troy and let him know what she was going to do. She pressed the home button on her phone—no service.

Once she knew Troy wouldn’t be aware of what she was going to do, Eva felt completely alone. It was time to think of a plan. That SUV could belong to anyone. If she was seen sneaking around, the cops could be called, or worse yet, she could be shot at. She would have a lot of explaining to do. But if that was the vehicle that held Sadie, nothing was more important than rescuing her. Eva remembered that her glove compartment held a flashlight with a night vision option. Hoping the batteries would still have power, she took it out and turned it on.

This will work.

The light that shone from it had a soft red glow. That made it easy for her to see where she was going but wasn’t as intrusive as a glaring white light from a regular flashlight. It had the basic light option, too, in case it was needed. The compartment also held a leather case with her hunting knife. She took that out and clipped it on her waistband. Eva reached under her seat, pulled out her loaded Glock, and tucked it securely behind her belt.

Time to go. Reaching up to the overhead console, she turned off the interior light switch so the car would stay dark when she opened the door. After she took the keys out of the ignition and put them in her pocket, she quietly got out. As she pointed the flashlight straight down at the ground, she walked carefully through the woods, toward the driveway. Standing behind a tree for cover, she peered around it and saw the SUV parked next to a cabin. She flipped off the flashlight. There was no need for it since she could see her way. Staying close to the edge of the driveway, she continued on. When she approached the car, she leaned against the fender and peered in the back window.

Oh my God, that’s Sadie.

Eva quickly looked around to see if anyone else was in sight. No one. She quietly opened the car door. It was hard to believe what she was looking at. Sadie was not only blindfolded and gagged but tied with a rope around her ankles, and her wrists were bound behind her.

The first thing Eva did was pull her blindfold off. Sadie’s eyes were wide with fear.

“Sadie, don’t worry. It’s me, Eva. We have to talk quietly.
