Kelly peered between the curtains of the fleabag motel room where she was holed up overnight. A snowplow rumbled through the parking lot. So much snow blanketed the vehicles that she couldn’t recognize the Jeep, but she remembered where it was parked. The sky, dusky silver, brightened by the minute. Security lamps faded toward nothingness. She felt like the lamps, as if dawn would make her vanish.

She left the window and found a phone book in a drawer. Cash’s number was in her phone, but her phone was gone. It had fallen from her pocket while she crawled through the snow to escape Helm’s men. So she used the motel-room phone. She didn’t usually worry about germs, but the beige hand piece looked so filthy that she wiped it with a soapy washcloth and dried it with a hand towel before making the call.

A woman answered. She asked Kelly’s name in a businesslike voice and told her to state her business with Detective Peterson.

“It’s about the Marcus French case. He knows me.”

The woman put her on hold, not for long. “Detective Peterson is unavailable. Leave your number and he’ll get back to you.”

“I’ll just call later.”

The Guardians would be waiting at Kelly’s house, but probably not at the museum. MOR was closed Mondays. Ordinarily she had the day off, but this week she needed to work on the fundraiser. She could reach MOR by nine o’clock if she started for Boulder now, but an almost sleepless night had left her exhausted. She climbed back into bed. Just a few more minutes.

She was drifting toward emptiness, a pleasant haze, when three sharp raps on the window made her sit up. She hurried to the curtains. Animal stood outside holding two Styrofoam cups in a cardboard frame. He grinned. For a crazy moment she thought he was bringing her coffee, but he turned and ambled along the sidewalk fronting the motel rooms. He entered one of them. Kelly retreated to the phone and tried again to reach Cash.
