There was a bench outside the carwash next to the diner. They sat down there, watching the cars come out dripping wet, a crew of Mexicans wiping them down with rags. Eva looked even better out here in the sunlight, and somehow she reminded him of an old girlfriend, though he wasnât sure what it was about her. She took out a pack of Marlboroâs, put a cigarette in her mouth, lit it. She kept staring at Morris, like she was trying to figure out if he was for real. She had sensual green eyes, and the way she was looking at him excited him a little. He said: âI like your hair.â
She reached up, touched the ends lightly with her fingers. âYeah? It was real long, âtil âbout three months ago. I wanted somethinâ different, so my girlfriend cut it for me. I been thinkinâ âbout gettinâ a rinse, red maybe.â
âI wouldnât.â
âNo?â
âNo, that colorâs niceâsuits you.â
âThanks.â She drew on the cigarette, blew out the smoke. âYou know, I donât get you. Minute ago, I thought you were tryinâ to pick me up, now Iâm wonderinâ if youâre queer or somethinâ.â
Jesus! Queer? Morris felt himself turn red, and he forced a laugh. âWhyâjust âcause I said you got nice hair?â
âWell, most guysâyou know, normal guysâdonât talk about the color of a girlâs hair. Theyâll tell you you got nice tits or a great ass or whatever, but they wonât say your natural color suits you.â
âMaybe you been hanging around with the wrong kinda guys.â
âJesus, you got that right.â
âI just think you got nice hairâs all. Iâm not gay.â
âI donât care,â she said. âDonât bother me none. This guy I went out with once in high school turned out to be queer. He got AIDS, though, and died. You donât look queerâbut you can never tell, right?â
âNo, I only like womenâbelieve me.â She shrugged, and he said: âCould I bum a cigarette?â She took out the pack, gave him one, then lit it for him. âThanks,â he said, taking a drag on it. It was the first one heâd had in a week and a half, maybe two weeks. Heâd been trying to quit. It felt and tasted great.
âSo letâs have it,â she said. âWhatâs the mystery?â
âYou know a girl named Jeanette, early to mid twenties, dark blond hair, kinda heavy, works at the diner?â
âYeah, sure.â
âWhatâs her last name?â
âCarpioli.â
âJeanette Carpioli?â
âYeah.â
âWhereâs she live?â
Eva knocked the ash off her cigarette. âNot sure.â
âEighth Street?â
âCould be.â
Then it hit him: âCarpioli.â Eddie the Carp. He said: âYou know someone named Eddie Carpioli?â
âYeah, thatâs her dad.â
âYou ever seen him? He come into the diner?â
âNot for a while,â Eva said. âHeâs in jail. Jeanetteâs always bitching about having to work, âcause heâs in prison.â She paused, drew on the cigarette, said: âWhatâs this about, anyway? You mixed up with her dad somehow?â
âMixed up, how? What dâyou mean?â
âEddieâs mob. Him and Joey Spinoza run Philly.â
âNo, nothing like that,â said Morris.
âThen what is it? You got a thing for her?â
Morris laughed for real this time.
