I swallowed hard. She had so much promise. All her life was still before her. She was going to have a family and whatever else her future might bring her, and just like that it had all been torn away. I turned back around, still not completely sure what had just happened. I closed my eyes pressing my fingers to my forehead where she had been shot.

“Finish the story,” Fagan prompted.

I cracked open my eyes. “She’s gone. The whole scene played, then she disappeared.” I told him exactly what I saw.

One side of his mouth rose and his eyes were wide. “That’s amazing. It’s like reading the witness statements, except the pregnancy was only mentioned on the autopsy. You really saw it again?”

I felt dizzy. I drew in a slow breath and let it out. “I think I need to eat. I feel sick.”

Fagan waved over the waitress and we each ordered a cheeseburger.

“So are you going to tell me what happened?”

I took a sip of my water some of the pain starting to fade. “I did.”

“Between you and Gabriel this morning. You’re doing a good job pretending, but I can see something’s bothering you. What did you do?”

“Me? I didn’t do anything. He was the asshole.”

“I’m all ears.”

I explained it all as quickly as I could. “And now he hasn’t called.”

Fagan folded his hands in front of him. “And he’s wrong? Everything that happened isn’t weighing on you? Because you don’t seem like yourself, and you haven’t for a while. I can count on my fingers the number of times we’ve spoken since the hospital. It’s been a year, Ella.”

“I almost got you killed,” I whispered, staring at his scar. I still vividly remembered walking into his house with Gabriel and thinking he was dead.

He shook his head. “I almost got myself killed. None of that was your fault. I should have never gotten mixed up with William. I should have never involved you in the case.”

I took a sip from my water glass. Had I not investigated that case and came after William so hard, Fagan wouldn’t have been attacked. It was my fault.

“Do you want to know what I think?”

“Are you going to agree with Gabriel?”

He grinned at me. “More than you will like.”

I rolled my eyes. “I miss drinking.”

He made a face, drawing in a deep breath. “Shit, you and me both.”

I hadn’t even noticed. He hadn’t had a single drink since he had come to Montgomery and he hadn’t tried to talk me into drinking. That’s what was different about Fagan. “You stopped drinking?”

He nodded. “I’ve been seeing a therapist too.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Dating a therapist, or counseling?”

Fagan laughed. “Fair question, but I don’t think I’m his type.” He winked at me. “I had a lot to deal with after that case, so rather than drinking it away—which was becoming a little too easy—I figured I might as well get in front of this. Maybe you inspired me a little. And since then, I’ve been re-evaluating my entire life.
