We hadn't been home two hours when Lieutenant Riddle stopped by. "Already?" I asked. "You didn't spend much time on your investigation."

"At Gents? I have five men working there. I wanted to see you myself. Where's Everett?"

"Upstairs. I made him take a sleeping pill."

"How strong? Will you be able to wake him?"

"I can get him up. He'll be groggy, but you can still question him."

"You first. I have to see if you both tell the same story."

"Why wouldn't we? You think either of us would make something up when there are plenty of witnesses to contradict us?"

"The security guard thinks it's all a joke."

"The security guard's an asshole. How about you? Do you think it's a joke?"

"It doesn't matter what I think. A couple of the men we've spoken to agree with him, or at least they say it's possible."

"I don't buy it, just like I didn't buy your theory that he staged the break-in. Who the hell opened the emergency exit?"

"Everett used to work there. He has friends among the attendants. One of them could've been in on it."

"Sounds farfetched to me."

"All of it's farfetched. A killer roaming the streets cutting the throats of gay men is farfetched. So let's hear your story."

"This isn't the first time someone's gone after Jamie."

"You mean his apartment? In my opinion, it wasn't the slasher."

"I'm talking about last night. Someone broke in here, too. At least, we think someone broke in."

"Forget the bathhouse. Tell me about last night."

It took a long time to tell. When I got to the end, I said, "Don't tell me Jamie left me that message. And what about the car?"

"You two have reason to be worried—good reasons, and plenty of them. Could be your imaginations, could be coincidence, could be the slasher is stalking Everett. I'm taking this very seriously. Very. Now go wake your partner."

"Don't you want to hear my version first?"

"No, I want you to listen to his. Carefully. See if it jives with what you remember."

"You still think he set it all up?"

"May have. I'm not ruling anything out. As I said, I take this very seriously."

Jamie was half asleep and not very articulate, but except for what happened while I was prepping, his version differed not one iota from mine. What I hadn't anticipated was that it would embarrass the hell out of me.

"Explain what you mean by washing out," Riddle said, and Jamie did—in more detail than was necessary, I thought.

Then Riddle had me tell my story, asked a few questions, thanked us, and said good night. We triple locked all the doors, checked the windows, and went to bed.

"I can't stay in this city," Jamie said.

"We'll get away as soon as we can. It's no problem for me to move my vacation a week earlier. Will they let you at the plant? Can you get them to let you take both weeks now?"

"I'll make them if I have to bribe a doctor to say it's a medical necessity."

"I'll surf the Net in the morning to see what kind of trip I can put together.
