"Callie, I’ve got the best news! I had to tell you as soon as I heard." The excitement in Robert’s voice was infectious, and she sat down on the arm of her couch to listen. As soon as she was seated, Harmonia was up in her lap, insistent. Her other cat, Discordia, dragged itself along her calf to demand equal time.

She adjusted the phone so she could clutch it with her shoulder while she lavished attention on the two cats. "Okay, I’m sitting down. Tell me."

"Andrea just called. Simon and Schuster wants a three-book deal."

She squealed. It was hard not to—he was so proud, almost out of breath with his own enthusiasm. "That’s wonderful! I’m so happy for you!"

"I owe it all to you. I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve given me."

She felt herself blush and furrowed her brow at her own foolishness. "It was there inside you all the time. You just needed some help finding it, that’s all." It wasn’t entirely true, but it was better to feed him a palatable lie than to tell the outright truth—that if she hadn’t unlocked it, if he hadn’t come to her ready to pay, it likely would have stayed locked up inside him forever. Better to let him have his moment of glory.

"I want to see you again. I need to see you."

Harmonia pressed up into her hand, and Callie smiled. "You’re not sure where those other two books might come from, eh?"

She heard his embarrassed chuckle carry over the line. "Not a clue. But I’ve got a good idea where to find them."

"Can you put us up in the same hotel?"

"I already have reservations. A suite, so hopefully my typing won’t disturb you."

"Last time, I disturbed your typing, not the other way around."

"You won’t hear me complain, either. See you this evening."

Callie started to respond when she realized he’d already hung up the phone.
