Chapter Eleven

“Kellie, shouldn’t we call your Uncle Mike before we march around so they can search for that other infant?” Hunter asked.

“Noooo,” Taylor insisted.

“She’s right,” Kellie answered. “If we call Uncle Mike now, he’ll show up and make us leave. They told us to stay away, and the sheriff might put a guard here 24/7. Gertrude would most likely try to kill the guard. We take care of her first and once Gertie’s gone, I’ll do my best to help locate the baby’s remains.” She took a step closer to the field. “Hmm, where to start?”

Taylor’s eyes scanned the area around Ivory House. The trees surrounding the walking paths had begun their fall change. A combination of fall colors adorned the huge oaks and maples. The massive pines would remain green. Taylor mused that they would remain sturdy and guard the rest. Her eyes wandered to the huge empty field behind Ivory House.

“Kellie, how are we going to find that cellar? If the house burned down, there might not be any remnants. The cellar door could be flush with the ground. Did Cora give you a general idea where to look,” Taylor asked. She turned and slowly took in the grounds. “There are a few acres back here.”

Kellie twisted her lip and bit down on the right side. She shook her head as her phone chirped.

She smiled. “Claudia’s going high-tech. She sent me a text.

Kellie, you all need to hold hands and concentrate. Gertrude believes she is hiding. Let the energy her spirit gives off lead you to her.

“Hold that thought,” Taylor said. “I have to… well, I’m not going out in the field.”

Hunter burst out laughing. “You don’t want her to go in the field. On our honeymoon, I convinced her to camp out one night. The hotel loaned us everything we would need. Everything except a bathroom.”

“Hunter was a pain in the behind. He refused to drive me out of the woods to find a bathroom and when I finally thought I’d be safe behind a tree he made growling noises,” Taylor retorted hands on her hips.

Hunter did his best to stop laughing, but couldn’t. He added, “Taylor fell right over and was stuck on the ground half dressed. I’ll never forget it. To make it worse she refused to go down to the lake and take a bath.” He grinned.

“Well,” Taylor huffed. “You stopped laughing after the tenth bucket of water you had to carry up from the lake so I could clean up.”

“I learned a lesson that night. Next time, I thought about a vacation, the first thing I check is the facilities. Besides, Taylor prefers five-star hotels to the wonders of nature.”

Lance tried to hide his grin and nearly succeeded until Taylor glared at him. She added to his amusement. To save himself he suggested, “We’re close enough to the hotel. I can sneak the ladies into the employee entrance, and they can use the bathroom.”

“Smart man,” Taylor said and began walking toward the hotel.

Kellie looked at Max and Hunter.
