“Was it like that?”

Ann nodded. “Just like that!”

“And now you start again. There are other horses out there. I know they’re not Pilot, but you have Darius. There is the coming event and you want to ride through the winter. Get yourself and the horse fit.”

“It will seem queer riding another horse, knowing Pilot isn’t there when I return, and honestly, Mike, no other horse I’ve yet ridden can compare with him for fire and power, speed and strength,” said Ann dreamily.

“But Pilot’s gone. You’re here. Out there is a horse and you have plenty to do and must do it!” emphasized Mike.

Ann looked up at him. Dear Mike, he was right of course. Sitting around moping wouldn’t get her anywhere. She’d get sour and crabbed if she wallowed in self-pity!

Brother and sister looked at each other and Mike saw she was coming round and seeing sense. “That’s my girl. How do you think Jim and the others will feel if they have to look at you walking around all day with a face as long as a fiddle?” he teased her mildly.

Ann hugged him back. “I’m O.K. now, big brother! You can go and tell Jim!”

Mike’s eyes twinkled happily, already seeing a sparkle appear in Ann’s face.

“Well, you make us a coffee, and how about digging out some cake from that tin?”

Ann smiled as he walked out of the house. Dear, lovable Mike!

“Jim?” called Mike.

“Here, in the feed room, just mixing the late-night feeds for Dido and Darius!” Jim called from the small room under the loft where the bins were kept which held the food for daily use. A long chute ran through the ceiling from the loft and it was down this that the bins were filled when necessary.

“I’ve had a big-brother talk with her. She’s all right now but you want to make her ride every day, Jim. Keep her occupied.”

“I’ll do that, starting from tomorrow.”

Jim told his tale for the third time about the possible overseas sale and their proposed trip to Australia as a working holiday.

“I think that’s a splendid idea.”

“Of course, the sale isn’t settled yet. Simon Rawlings rang me again a couple of hours ago and I gave him the price,” and Jim explained the talk he’d had with Tom. “Of course, he pretended to be outraged. Said he wanted to buy three horses and not the stud, but we’ve got to play the rules of the game properly. He’s too interested to haggle long. He knows it and I know it!” grinned Jim.

“Good for you. But, Jim,” said Mike changing the subject, “what about O’Hara? He’s not been caught yet. What do you think?”

Jim considered as he mixed the oats and bran together. “I think he’s left the country if you ask me. A man can hide out for so long but not for ever. He’d need money; where could he get it?”

“Unless he was planning some way to get it and hurt you at the same time!” Mike pointed out.

Jim shook his head.
