CHAPTER SEVEN

KATE felt drained by the end of the day which was about to extend even further, she lamented. She had to attend the rescheduled staff meeting. Getting up from her desk, she stretched, working her shoulders as she walked across to the window and peered out. She sighed. On glorious, big-sky days like this, she wished she was outdoors. She needed to see the setting sun gild the tops of the mountains, turning their outlines into purple shapes of mystery and leave the sky shot with brazen stripes of orange and gold.

Oh, please. She turned, shaking herself out of her fanciful thoughts, when the knock sounded on her door and Aiden poked his head in. He gave a crooked, slightly uncertain smile that tipped her heart off kilter. ‘OK to come in?’

‘Of course.’ She looked at him a little warily. She hoped he wasn’t going to pressure her about next weekend.

‘I haven’t seen you all day,’ he said mournfully.

Kate shrugged. ‘Wall-to-wall appointments. You?’

‘Same.’ He moved across to her desk, hooking his thigh over the corner. ‘Can I do anything for you?’ He gave her a funny little smile that made her heart turn over again.

Kate raised a brow. ‘Like what?’ She moved back to her desk so she was quite close to him.

He smiled again. ‘Hug, maybe? Massage—Oops! Probably not that. Not here.’

Kate gave a strangled laugh. ‘A coffee that was actually hot might be nice.’

‘Done.’ He slipped off her desk and straightened. ‘I might even manage to pinch some of that almond shortbread Vicki keeps hidden.’

‘Yum…’ Kate licked her lips, stopping abruptly when she saw his eyes darken.

‘Ah…Katie…’ he whispered, his breath hissing out, elongating the sound. ‘I’ve missed you every second of today.’ He reached out, touching her cheek.

Kate swallowed roughly. His mouth was just a breath away. Just a breath…

A beat of stillness.

The kiss when it finally came brought a long shuddering sigh from her chest and she could feel his hand trembling against her cheek.

‘You’re an angel,’ he whispered. ‘And I want you.’

Kate heard a whimper of longing—her own? Her body called to his, finding a home against its solid muscularity.

His hand cupped her breast and she arched into his palm, aching for him, for the weight of him poised over her until the moment she became flesh of his flesh, part of him. Inseparable.

On a harsh breath, Aiden pulled back, hauling himself under control. He gave her a resigned look. ‘Let’s get that coffee.’

‘Sorry to hold you back, people,’ Angelo apologised. ‘We’ll whip through as quickly as we can.’ Matters relating to the running of the surgery were dealt with expeditiously and then Angelo said, ‘Anyone have any patient concerns they’d like to pass along?’

There were negative murmurs and then Aiden spoke up. ‘I had a patient at the after-hours clinic on Saturday. I thought I’d handled it sensitively enough to get a good result for her but the outcome proved otherwise. I’ve spoken to Kate about it.’ He looked at his male colleagues. ‘I’d value your input.
