Chapter 12

Dan sighed and opened yet another document. People always thought a private investigator had such an exciting career. Sure, he’d been involved in some pretty intense stuff. However, most of his job required that he sit at a desk, sorting through information that may or may not be legal for him to have.

He really needed to focus on his task. Unfortunately, Trevor made concentrating on his computer impossible. Sometime after they’d made love, Trevor’s scent had changed. He’d smelled fear before, he’d smelled sadness and could pick up when someone was happy, excited or aroused, but he’d never been able to pinpoint confidence until Trevor’s wolf had decided Trevor was well enough to keep them safe.

He almost shut down his laptop and suggested that Lucas play the video game system with headphones on so he could have his way with Trevor.

Almost.

He scanned the document, which turned out to be a checklist for someone’s vacation, and clicked the little red x. He desperately wanted to turn off his laptop and join his family at the desktop computer where they were laughing at an illustration of what a werewolf was supposed to look like. Trevor had turned Luke’s interest in Greek shifters into a lesson on why believing everything that’s on the internet was dangerous.

In reality, though, it sounded as if it was an excuse to laugh at crazy pictures.

Screw it. He was ninety percent sure there was nothing more to find in these documents. He was about to shut down his computer when his phone rang.

He didn’t recognize the number, but only a select few had his cell number so he didn’t feel right not answering it.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Dan. This time it’s going to cost you a lot more. Do you know how hard it was to circumvent the Canadian Government’s system? I’m pretty damn impressed actually. It makes me a little more confident in the privacy of my tax information.”

“Whoa, Hacker. Take a breath.” His informant sounded like he was hopped up on too many cups of coffee and a couple cans of Red Bull.

A long sigh echoed down the line and he could practically feel the tension draining out of the man and waited patiently until Hacker was ready to talk again.

“I managed to get into the system and I’m prepared to send all the documents our usual way. I almost got caught this time, so I’ll be going underground for a few months until things blow over. I’ll contact you when I’m ready to pick up some work again.”

Hacker still sounded nervous which in itself wasn’t odd. In fact, Hacker usually seemed like he was constantly in fight or flight mode. Still, if he’d admitted to nearly getting caught, it must have been close. Hacker never before confessed to any difficulties.

“You going to be okay?”

“Yeah. I know how to hide. I have a new bank account, by the way. I’ll send you the information when I send over the documents.”

Dan glanced at the clock. “I can send it over as soon as I get the documents.
