Kishen Das did not only worry about Justice Shankarâs safety. He went a step ahead by taking concrete action and forming an information network to gather all possible details about preparations being made by the enemy camp. He made friends with various people who could come handy in various situations. They formed a group of âwell-wishersâ. Thus his network covered arms dealers, employees in explosives and ammunition factories and wrestlersâ arenas on one side. Police posts, police officers, guards on night vigil as well as bank officials were also in his network. He had also made friends with some vegetable and fruit vendors who used to roam around Daataa Anandâs ashram. He had requested them all to inform him at once if they heard anything suspicious. All his friends had high regard for Justice Shankar and they were quite alert all the time.
That particular day Kishen left home early. He had to make up with Seema for not turning up at her college again. Both of them were happily having a breakfast of puri and jalebi at the Marwari Basa, their favourite restaurant. In fact, of late, Kishen had been so busy with the court case that he had not spent much time with Seema and she was very upset with him. When Kishen rang her up to apologize, she had disconnected without saying anything. Kishen understood immediately that this time he had stretched it a bit too far. Seema was a sweet and understanding kind of a person. She would usually give him a chance to explain, but this time she was obviously hurt beyond words. However, Kishen knew how to be contrite and make his girl happy, so the morning saw him up before time and heading straight to Seemaâs house. When she opened the door, Kishen smiled. Seema did not respond.
âI couldnât sleep last night, Seema! I have been thinking only about you!â he pleaded.
âLiar!â Seema turned away.
âSay that again! You look ravishing with that expression.â
âSo what have you come here for? You want me to give you sleeping pills?â Seema had asked rudely, ignoring Kishenâs flattery.
âI have come here to soothe my burning eyes. I just want to look at you.â
âShut up! Donât I know you?â
âYou do? Come, tell me all that you know about me and give me a chance to defend myself, we are going out for breakfast,â Kishen spoke in one breath and pulled her on to his motorbike.
âWait, I need to inform my family,â Seema said, knowing that Kishan would not take ânoâ for an answer.
Kishen thought this was the best way to get through to her. They spent an hour dealing with every issue, however small, concerning their relationship and in the end, they smiled at each other, held hands, and made promises of everlasting love, care, trust and friendship. All faults were forgiven and forgotten.
Refuelled and brimming with fresh energy, Kishen dropped Seema back and headed home. Even from a distance he could see that his father was angry. He
