“Damon!” She shook my shoulder as I lay there recovering.

“What?” I cracked one eye open to admire at her nakedness.

“Damon!” Violently, she shook me again as I lay there in post-coital bliss, slowly shrinking back to a relaxed state.

“What? What?” I propped myself up on one elbow and blinked rapidly until I could pry open both eyes.

“I’m serious! Look!” She had this wide-eyed desperate look of hope on her face. “There is a boat!”

Swiftly rolling over, I tucked her in next to me pulling a sheet over us as I looked to the horizon where she pointed.

I gasped. “Holy shit!” There was a boat, a dark speedboat, low to the ground, bounding over the waves on its way toward us. Wake flew behind as it ate up the distance between us and them.

“Get dressed, Harper. Now.” I turned her toward the companionway, gathered our things from the deck, and tossed them down below. Then I grabbed the binoculars for a closer look at the boat.

Still a few miles away, it was closing the gap quickly and would likely intercept us in just a few minutes. That’s not the Coast Guard, and it doesn’t look like a rescue.

“Hand me my pants,” I hollered to Harper below.

“Here!” She popped back up, fully dressed. “Is it the Coast Guard? Are we saved?” She looked at me with a giant smile.

“No.” My clipped statement wiped the happiness of her face.

“Then who is it?” She asked, her face rosy, flushed with that well-fucked look I was beginning to recognize.

“I don’t know, but no one good has a go-fast boat that looks like that.”

She climbed the rest of the way up onto the deck and looked at the oncoming boat with me. “Who do you think it is?” She clutched my arm as the boat grew bigger and the men inside became visible.

It looked like a cigarette boat—a high-powered, high-speed precision machine full of angry armed military men. “Pirates.”

“Pshaw.” She chuckled and slapped my arm. “Pirates don’t exist.”

“Not Pirates-of-the-Caribbean pirates, but modern day pirates. They hijack the boats, kill or kidnap the crew, and take what they want.” I pulled her closer. “They aren’t here to help us.”
