Chapter Thirteen
Peter's house was a mansion, the type you see on television, with a wide waterfall structure and a pool. Peter didn't care for the furniture. The furniture was made of fine oak wood. A wide chandelier dangled from the ceiling. He had no decoration on his walls, no personal photos, only a few expensive wall paintings. Two huge, wet flower pots sat beneath them. His wall-fitted television looked far too tall against the wall. I doubted it had been switched on for a long time. The fireplace was not the usual wood-burning fireplace. It was artificial, which I guessed also provided some ambience when turned on. Although his home looked so lonely, it certainly wasn't messy.
Then, I guessed Peter had maids who did the cleaning and organizing for him. I looked around, realizing I was in the home of one of the wealthiest people in the country. Peter led me to his room, our room. The huge bed with an excessive white duvet caught my attention, and I couldn't help but wonder how Peter got up to work every morning. If I had a bed as big as this, I would never get up to work early.
"You are welcome to make yourself comfortable in my home." Peter stated and then went out of the room. I followed him to another room at the end of the hallway. His mother was here. The door creaked open, and I saw his mother lying on the bed. Her monitor beeped slowly, and a drip was passed to her arm. Her eyes were closed when we walked closer to her bed. A framed picture of Peter's mother and two boys hung on the wall above her. Although, Peter's mother on the bed now looked different from the picture above her bed. In the picture, she was a beautiful redhead with brown eyes, but now, she had her hair scraped to almost bald.
"She is beautiful," I said as we stared at her unmoving body.
"You remind me so much of her," Peter said, and he motioned to walk away as if he had not just told me I made him remember his mother. He was determined to get away from me and his mother, but his words only made me more curious about what he meant. Was that why Peter took an interest in me? Was that why he thought I'd be the perfect person to act like his wife for the next few months? Peter's words made me more curious about him. His words made me want to know who he is, exactly.
"Hey, Peter." I stopped him before he got to the stairs leading to the living room. He put his hand in his pockets as he turned to me. "In Pennsylvania, you said you never mentioned your mother."
Peter bit his lips. He didn't let me finish my question. He knew I would ask him why he never mentioned his mother in Pennsylvania, or even his father. "Yes," he replied slowly. "Maybe I will tell you everything about my family someday.
