CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Michael slowed his pace as they neared the outskirts of Tess’s property. He could see the house was dark, but he didn’t trust in its safety. They had steered clear of the road as they hiked out of town, scrambling over rocky terrain. Each had remained silent, preoccupied by their own thoughts.

Now he approached the house cautiously, pressing his back against the wall, and sliding to the edge of a window. He listened for several minutes, and then dared to peer in the glass. He saw no signs of movement and stole past it, guiding Tess behind him. He hesitated at the door then reached out and slowly turned the handle. He let the door swing inward of its own accord. It creaked, the sound cutting through the still night, making their hearts beat faster; but nothing happened. Taking a deep breath, he crossed the threshold and threw on the lights. The switch clicked, but the house remained dark. He tensed then remembered the candlelight from the night before. She had already moved to the window to retrieve the candle and matches, and in minutes the light revealed her empty home.

She stood, seeming unsure of what to do next.

“Tessie...” he murmured, “get your things together.”

She looked at him blankly a moment then moved to a trunk at the foot of the bed and lifted out a few blouses and a couple of pairs of jeans. She sat staring at the items gathered on her bed.

He nodded at her torn blouse. “Maybe you should change?”

Her head bobbed dumbly and he crossed to the window.

Staying out of view, Michael scanned the horizon for uninvited guests. He glanced over his shoulder. Tess had removed his jacket and laid it neatly on the bed. She untied her apron/uniform skirt and let it drop to the floor. Stepping out of it, she removed a pair of jeans from the bed. He couldn’t help taking in the smooth, sensual curve of her bare hip, marred only by a thin line of black lace crossing it, before the denim robbed him of his view. Quickly, he turned back in case she lifted her head and caught him gaping at her. Raising a hand to the window, he released a slow, tremulous breath.

The fields outside remained quiet. The view was clear all the way through the gap in the stone wall surrounding the property to the road. Michael couldn’t resist another peek back. He caught her eye as she was about to take the blouse off over her head.

“You’ll have to turn around,” she said matter-of-factly.

He looked away, chuckling quietly at her modesty, which seemed so out of place considering the circumstances. I mean, come on. It’s not like I haven’t been around the block a few times, actually...quite a few times... But even as he thought it, he knew this was different. Somehow she had a way of making everything new to him, and that revelation terrified him. He had promised himself a long time ago he would not care for anyone but himself.
