Chapter Four

Dante snapped awake, unsure what had disturbed his sleep. He was in the cab of the truck, his sleeping bag around his ankles, pretty well where he’d found himself dozens of times in the last year. But something was different. Besides the fact he was naked, which was not how he normally slept when he parked in a truck stop or rest area. He always wore his boxer briefs and T-shirt.

Kat. Her image popped into his mind, and it all came flooding back. When he’d fallen asleep, however long ago, he’d had her tucked into his side. His bag still had a faint scent of lavender and a less faint odor of sex.

He wasn’t sure how long he’d been out, but the full moon had risen over the mountains and the cab was nearly daylight bright. Bright enough to confirm none of her clothes were lying around. Scrambling into his own, he laced his boots and popped the door, pausing to grab something and stuff it in his pocket. He was concerned but not overly. Few people would be up here late at night and, sure enough, as he stepped onto the gravel, he saw her sitting on the low wall, her knees tucked up, arms wrapped around them. It was cold, but, at some point, the wind had died and the moon hung low in the sky to the southwest, big and heavy and yellow. Magic.

He moved up beside her, his boots crunching on the gravel announcing his presence. She didn’t turn around, but her low voice carried to him. “We could be anywhere. On another planet even. It could be a moon of Jupiter.”

Dropping a kiss on her hair, he followed her gaze into the valley below while stepping over the low wall. “Would you like it to be?”

“Well, what little girl doesn’t dream of being an astronaut? When I was very young, I used to study the star charts so I could find my way when I got my spaceship.”

He settled beside her and laid an arm over her shoulders, tugging her close. “What made you change your mind?”

“Mom and Dad. When they died, I didn’t care about things far away in the universe anymore. I just wanted to fix what happened. I mean, I was old enough to know they weren’t coming back, but I wanted to do something, you know? Maybe help some other little kids keep their mommy and daddy.” She drew a shuddering breath. “I don’t talk about it a lot, neither do my brother and sister, but the tragedy shaped our professional lives.”

“It must have about killed your grandparents.” He rubbed his palm up and down her arm, wanting to offer comfort but feeling so helpless. How could he ease her pain? He could not imagine what it must be like to lose her folks so young. His mom and dad were comfortably retired in San Antonio. They had hobbies and friends and favorite restaurants. They were so happy to see him when he visited, even if they did drive him just a little crazy fussing over him.
