Jae sat on the edge of Hunter’s bed. Who needed a bed that could fit four people? Maybe he slept with a harem of women at one time.

The morning sun shone through the drapes, but she hadn’t bothered to pull them open. She still had no clothes. Hunter hadn’t allowed her out of the bedroom the night before. After her confession, he’d brought up a tray of food and sat with her while she ate, then he put her to bed.

She’d rested more since he brought her home than she had in weeks. But she wanted out of the room, she wanted to walk freely through the house.

She wanted underwear.

After telling him her desire to kill his uncle, she expected him to be angry with her. Punish her for snooping in his office.

Instead, after bathing her and gifting her with a mind-altering orgasm, he’d spent the night feeding her and gently probing her about her parents and what she’d been up to over the past five years.

Maybe if she’d spent less time grieving, she would have known about Jansen’s change in clubs. Maybe she could have planned better. Or at all.

Her mother had always told her heart moved her more than her mind. Turned out she was right. It was her sorrow that drove her, not anything close to logic.

But now she had to think, because if Hunter told his uncle she would be in danger. Real danger. Not just fearful of getting contracted to some asshole at the Annex, but life or death kind of trouble.

Hunter strode through the door in a pair of black slacks and a deep blue button-down shirt. Every time his body moved toward her she felt as though she were his prey.

“You didn’t eat much breakfast,” he said, passing the cart where she’d left most of the scrambled eggs and toast untouched. It was hard to eat when thinking about how much you fucked up your life in one conversation.

“Not really hungry this morning.” She sat back on the bed, pushing herself against the pillows and pulling the sheet up her chest.

“Hmmm,” he said, moving to the armchair across the room. “You didn’t sleep much either,” he mused.

“Strange bed. Strange man.” She tried to joke.

“Come here,” he said once seated and patted his knee.

“I didn’t do anything wrong,” she argued.

His eyes narrowed. “You’re doing something wrong right now. When I tell you to come here, you come.” He pointed to his knee again.

She swallowed. That was pretty much the deal.

Sliding from the bed, she left the protective layer of the sheet behind and walked over to him. His eyes never left her body. Just feeling him looking at her made her feel powerful. The intimidation she’d sensed the first time they’d met had softened. Maybe because he hadn’t threatened her life with her confession. Maybe because when he looked at her now, his gaze held a hunger she’d never seen in a man’s eye before.

Once she was a step away from him, he parted his legs further.
