CHAPTER 10 - EVERETT

Winston glances up at me when Lexi's baby blue Yaris pulls to the curb in front of the school. I nod and squeeze his shoulder to answer him.

I feel the door open behind me as the administrator comes out, but I can't take my eyes off her. Distracted, swinging her handbag as she climbs the curb, her long legs moving beneath that fluttery, feminine skirt. I love it that she wears skirts, that she is so girlish and breezy. She has a certain catlike strength too, but she doesn't make an effort to flaunt it. She's comfortable being soft, just the way I like her.

She smiles brightly when she sees me, but then looks at Winston. I appreciate the way she approaches him seriously, making eye contact but not speaking, allowing him to make the first move.

To my surprise, he does. He sticks out his hand when she's close enough and she shakes it briefly. Then he pivots, looking up at me to see if I approve.

I approve, absolutely.

The administrator clears her throat politely and I turn toward her. “Mrs. Abernathy, this is Alexis Cooper. I'd like to have her on the authorized pickup list for Winston if that's all right. She's my, hm, nanny.”

I feel Lexi's eyes flicker toward me, but don't look back. I'm watching Mrs. Abernathy's face for signs of judgment or disapproval.

“Well, that's fine!” Mrs. Abernathy quips. “Did you bring your driver’s license, hon? We just need to get that into Winston's file along with the form and you'll be all set, okay?”

“Oh! Okay,” Lexi nods. “Is that all it takes? You don't need to fingerprint me or anything?”

Mrs. Abernathy laughs with her head back as though this is a joke, but I have a suspicion that Lexi wasn't entirely kidding. Somehow, I appreciate that she would be sensitive to issues of security.

With the ladies gone, I kneel so that I can look Winston directly in the eye. Actually, now I have to look up since he started his preadolescent growth spurt.

“I realize you are quite grown-up,” I start. “And that this probably seems far too babyish for someone as adult as you.”

His eyebrows go up in the center slightly, but he's careful not to be sarcastic. “She seems all right.”

I smile, glad to note his willingness for adventure. “Actually, she's more than all right. Do you think you might want to take piano lessons again?”

He tips his head slightly toward his left shoulder. “Piano lessons? Why do you ask?”

“Lexi is a music teacher,” I mutter conspiratorially. “You should ask her about it. It's always nice to have some topics of conversation prepared when you're with a lady. That's my fatherly advice for the day. Now you know she's a music teacher, and should it ever come up...”

He nods his understanding. “We'll have something to talk about,” he finishes for me.

“Exactly,” I agree, standing again.

My hand brushes over his short, colicky hair out of habit. He still lets me do that, and never complains about it.
