Chapter 14
âYouâre gonna regret foolinâ around right under Mr. Collinâs nose. He wonât put up with your shenanigans again.â
Shaken by Millieâs tactics, Sarah conjured all the bravado she could. âTake your hand off me.â Sarah tried a drop-dead look. It didnât do any good. Those talons retained their hold.
âMake me.â Millie stared down at the girl, her eyes glowing with malevolence. âYou can try, but no matter what you do Iâll be here long after youâre gone. And so will Libby.â
Millieâs threat turned the frightened woman into a protective mother. âOver your dead body,â Sarah hissed, âand Jasmineâs and Dosââ¦and Roseâs.â Sheâd almost goofed. Leaving Rose out of the equation wouldnât do. Millie wouldâve picked up on that immediately.
âSeems to me youâre out-numbered, Missy. It might be your shrimpy dead body you have to worry about.â
A chill shivered up Sarahâs spine. Millie looked capable of doing murder. Maybe sheâd better take her warning to heart. And she wouldâafter she put some distance between them. She kicked Millieâs shin, a maneuver sheâd become adept at, and ripped her arm from the housekeeperâs grasp. Stepping back, she eyed the womanâs red face and quivering chin.
âI may be small, but Iâve had to look after myself and Libby for years. I learned a few things. Donât write me off as easy to handle. You might live to regret the mistake.â
Sarah moved like lightning into the house. She didnât trust the much larger woman not to chase her down and carry out her threat. She hurried up the stairs and into her room. After locking the door she examined her aching arm. Red marks identified the places where bruises would appear later. Blood seeped from scratches received when she pulled away from Millieâs talons. She would enjoy showing her battle scars to Dos.
He viewed the damage sooner than she expected. The pounding on her door caused her to drop the cloth she been using to clean her wounded arm. She approached the vibrating door with caution. âWhoâs there?â
âLet me in,â Dos bellowed.
Fine, Sarah thought. Heâll see my arm now. She swung the door open. Dos stood before her like a fire-breathing dragon. The other dragon stood right behind him, a fiery red handprint decorated on side of her face, blood dripped down her other cheek. Sarahâs shocked gasp disappeared under Dosâ roar.
âYou want to tell me why you attacked Millie? I just donât understand you, woman. Whatâs got into you?â
Millieâs smug smile didnât go with her sniffling at all. Sarah stared at the actress wannabe, trying to guess which way she would jump next. She swung her gaze to Dos. Her enraged husband didnât look willing to listen to reason, but Sarah only had one story, the truth. So she waded in with her version.
âI didnât attack her. She attacked me.â Sarah extended her arm to show him the marks.
âWhat? That little place?â
Sarah looked down. The cold cloth had done a superb job. Red splotches had disappeared. Scratches had dimmed to pink lines. Compared to Millieâs injuries, Sarahâs seemed superficial.
