HOUSE OF GLASS: SHATTERED
CHAPTER ONE
ELODIE GLASS
âSquare your shoulders.â
âLike this?â
I adjust Ayaâs body so that sheâs perfectly perpendicular to the wooden dummy five meters in front of her.
âThere. Now remember, he can move fast but you have to wait until heâs in range before you throw. Otherwise the axe wonât hit him with enough force to do any serious damage and youâre dead. Once you can see the whites of his eyes, you have to be ready. Thatâs your chance.â
Today weâre working on increasing Ayaâs speed. Sheâs got good reflexes and sheâs quick, but not inhumanly fast.
She braces her weapon with both hands, then draws her left back over her shoulder and makes her throw. She nails it; the head of the axe is buried directly in the dummyâs face.
âGood!â Iâm genuinely impressed. âSee what I mean about the wrist? You have to throw your whole upper body into the throw, propelled through your hips, but then the real edge, the speed, comes from that last little flick of the wrist.â
âYeah, I get what you mean. Itâs all in the technique. Can we try again?â
Weâve already been throwing the axe for nearly two hours but I donât get tired and sheâs so proud of herself that I wonât deny her. And she deserves to be proud. Sheâs a quick learner and she seems to have a natural talent for melee weapons. Her smile lights up her face and I donât think Iâve ever seen her so happy.
But then again, I donât think sheâs ever had the chance to feel this way before.
Iâve known for years that Ayaâs trauma turned her into a shell of the person she could have been, hiding alone in the safety of her little den, afraid to pursue any possible interests because sheâs had to constantly look over her shoulder.
The more I get to know her, though, the more I can see that her deep insecurities were planted long before Olsen Leonard ravaged her life.
She barely ever talks about herself unless I ask her specific questions, but Iâve heard all about her perfect older sister. Nala was more talented, Nala was prettier, Nala was smarter, Nala was just superior in every possible way. And then Nala was martyred to save her âworthlessâ little sisterâs life.
Thatâs the way Aya sees things at least.
I never knew Nala. Maybe itâs all true, maybe Nala was a legendary beauty who was on the brink of giving Chopin a run for his money.
But thereâs no way that she could have held a candle to the light of my Aya.
Itâs simply not possible.
I just wish that I could make her see herself through my eyes. I wish that I could show her how magical she really is, but sheâs not making it easy for me. Whenever I tell her how I feel about her she tends to react by disparaging herself and it breaks my frozen heart.
