If you dig large holes, you create mountains.

That phrase again, repeating in his head.

McCann sensed that he was lying on open ground as before, but this time it felt not soft and flat like the grassy field where he first awoke but rough, hard and uneven. He snapped open his eyes and focused upon a grim, barren landscape. Now it was daylight again, but the murky sky had a strange, reddish tint that looked toxic. It was just like the pictures the miners sent back from Mars.

Maybe that was where he was.

Slowly, he began to clamber into a sitting position, testing his legs, his arms, his back for any sign of damage. Surprisingly, there was no pain anywhere in his body, and he seemed to have full use of his limbs. When he checked, there was not even a tear or scuff upon his clothing.

Strange, he thought as he looked around his new surroundings. But everything is strange around here. Nothing is real like on Earth.

For as far as the eye could see, there was nothing but desert broken by towering rocks. Van Houten told him there would be cities, like Ultra City X and Cyber City as well as numerous communities for the client who enjoyed socializing. Maybe he had to find one of those travel portals that can transport him to various places within Cybelysium – after all, this was only within a mind of a computer, where distance and time is only an illusion.

Slowly, he stood up, brushed sand from his otherwise immaculate clothing and turned around. Then he screamed.

The beast was still here, standing behind him. It was waiting silently beneath the skeletal remains of a withered, blackened tree, its yellow cat’s eyes glowing, that same malicious grin stretched across its reddened face.

“You… you again,” McCann managed to say after the initial shock eased slightly.

“I find you far too amusing to destroy so soon,” the horned creature told him. “You are my little toy, priest, and I wish to play a game for a while. After all, we have all of eternity, do we not?”

“My soul belongs to God, not to you.”

The thing only laughed at this before seemingly gliding above the ground, its motionless hooves never touching the sand. It passed McCann and swiftly continued out into the wasteland beyond, drifting effortlessly into the distance.

“Go then, my little man of God. Explore my world and see what you can find.” Although the creature was now so far away he was but a speck on the horizon, its voice was as strong as when it stood before the priest. “You will walk forever and not find any souls worth saving here – they are all sinners like you.” Finally, before it vanished out of sight, it said, “And if you happen to find God or Christ, do say hi from me.”

McCann continued to stare out into the dead landscape for a long time after the demon thing was gone, and only when his pulse returned to near-normal speed and the strength returned to his limbs did he put one foot before the other.
